#3 Lack of Knowledge
Many runners and new exercisers decide they want to run a 5K or half marathon or get into shape for spring break and just start running or working out for a hour a day. No homework, no schedule, no advice, no nothing. They just start running, strength training, or cross-training because they think they simply need to get going and then they will figure out the rest. Educate yourself on training as much as you can before you begin. Going into the gym and doing what you have seen in magazines or what the "regulars" are doing is asking for disaster. Hire a personal trainer or run coach for a few sessions (if you can't afford them full time) and learn the proper form and progression for strength and cardio training. Try taking a few classes where the instructors are knowledgable and encouraging. Also make sure you are properly attired. Go to a specialty running store and make sure you have the right shoes, socks, and apparel or you will be miserable. Knowledge is power, the more you know the more successful you will be with your goals.
