Vino e Birra Under New Ownership in La Grange

New owner John Hutzler can recommend a wine pairing for any food, including what to serve with your Thanksgiving bird next week.

More wine, more time.

La Grange wine shop Vino e Birra is under new ownership, which means a "beefed up" wine selection and expanded tasting times, owner John Hutzler said Thursday.

John and Maria Hutzler took ownership of the downtown La Grange business about three weeks ago. They've redecorated, brought in new wines and are trying to focus on bottles that "over-deliver" for less than $20, Hutzler said. They've also expanded their tastings, to offer free tastings on Fridays from 5-7 p.m. in addition to 2-5 p.m. on Saturdays.

Hutzler, who had a career in finance, said wine has been a hobby of his for over 30 years, and he knows his pairings.

"If you have something you want to eat, I can tell you what wines work and what wines won't work," he said.

His most recent task has been researching wines that would go well with turkey.

A few suggestions included rieslings, low-alcohol zinfandels and, "most surprisingly," a dry lambrusco. He said Friday's tasting will include his Thanksgiving pairing recommendations. He added that the tasting would also include five different Michigan wines—all under $15.

Vino e Birra is located at 18 W. Burlington Ave. They are open from 12-8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 12-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information, go to www.vinoebirra.com
