LT Replacing Grass on West Field, Still Considering Turf

The far west end of Lyons Township High School's West Field, or, the freshman field, is being re-sodded this week with natural grass, according to LT.

The field has been tilled to a depth of 10 inches and the soil has been mixed and is in the process of being tested to ensure the appropriate ph levels are present, according to the school.

The field was graded and the soil mixture compacted this week so that new grass sod can be laid. If all goes well, the natural grass field should be ready for play in the spring. In the meantime, all sporting events scheduled for the freshman field have been relocated to other LT fields.

The LT Board of Education has discussed the possibility of placing artificial turf on the field to the east of the freshman field, according to the school, but has not approved anything yet because of the cost, the village's replacement of a pipe beneath the field and a plan to improve the drainage and detention of the entire West Field.

"LT will provide further notice if the artificial field is considered for approval, including having it as an agenda item and allowing for additional public discussion at an LT Board of Education meeting," the school reports.
