Fireside: La Grange's Newest Pizza Joint Opens Today

Fireside, La Grange's new brick oven pizza joint, opens on Harris Avenue today.

If you're looking to put the flame back in your relationship, you might want to try doing it with a wood burning brick oven this Valentine's Day. They do say after all, the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Just in time for Valentine's Day, is the opening of Fireside Wood Fired Pizza & Cafe, located at 18 W. Harris Ave. in downtown La Grange. Fireside officially opens for business today, and they're expecting a big turnout. The restaurant is a fast casual concept, which means there's a table if you want to bring the family in for dinner, but there's no server. It also means you wont have to wait long for your food. Fireside can cook up a pizza in two minutes in their 700-degree oven, imported from Italy.  Fireside specializes in…

Singles Clubs Connect People Looking for People

Common interests, personal backgrounds and similar ages are some of the components that can forge bonds.

The focus of Valentine’s Day is on sweethearts, lovers and couples. But what if you are looking for that someone to complete you? You can look no further than a nearby singles club. Clubs bring singles together in a variety of ways, whether it’s through mutual interests such as skiing, golf and cooking; via ethnic backgrounds, religious affiliations and careers; or by age. One of the most successful clubs, considering its longevity, is the St. Charles Singles Club. In its 35th year, the club boasts 225 members from 45 suburbs. Billed as a club for singles 40 and older, the club offers four to five events a week, such as pinochle nights, movie nights and Saturday breakfasts; but the main events are its dances, which are held the second and …

Valentine's Day by the Numbers

The popularity of candy and and flowers can't be beat.

Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory Says "Be Mine" with Strawberries

Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in La Grange gears up for its busiest day of the year.

Still need to get your special beau, boo, hubby, lady, lover (or whatever else you choose to call them) something special for Valentine's Day? Don't worry! You're not alone.  "People tend to wait for the last minute," Jean Kuhn, owner of Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in La Grange said. According to Kuhn, Feb. 13 and 14 are the chocolate shop's two busiest days of the year. In fact, they're so busy, they need to call in reinforcements to handle the extra work. "It's bigger than Christmas for us," Kuhn said. "I couldn't do it without the extra help." Each year she calls on a few of her friends to come in and help staff her stores. Kuhn said she rewards her extra helper with yearlong discounts on Rocky Mountain's products. It's all About …

Valentine's Day Cards You'll Never Find in the Store

The cards you find in the store seldom hit the nail on the head.

More than once, I've bumped into my neighbor Pat, from across the street, in the greeting card aisle at Jewel. When it happens, it's usually about 7:30 a.m. on Mother's Day or Valentine's Day, when we're both looking for that perfect greeting card. However, that late in the greeting card cycle, the shelves are three-quarters empty and every card has a couple dozen fingerprints on it. If I can find a card that's not too smudgy, and if I can find an envelope that's about the right size, I grab those suckers and trot to the car happy as a dog who found a bone, even if it set me back $8.95. Even if I got there a week early, I don't think I'd find a card with enough unique rhymes on it to justify that sticker price. There ought to be more …

Patch Poll: The Perfect Valentine's Day Gift

What would you want Cupid to do for you on Feb. 14?

Sixty-two percent of American adults will celebrate Valentine’s Day, says History.com. According to History.com computations, men spend an average of $150 for this celebration; women spend $74. So it seems that some thought has to go into the gift-giving aspect of the day. There are the flowers-and-candy gift-givers, the romantic dinner people and the I-don’t-have-a-clue-what-to-get group. Patch asks: What is the perfect Valentine’s Day gift? If your favorite is not listed in the poll, tell us in the comments below. Well, Super Bowl 2012 is history, but we probably aren’t done talking about the commercials. In last week’s Patch Poll about favorite Super Bowl commercials, the 1980 Mean Joe Green Coke ad scored well, with 38 percent of poll …
