Did the Hair-Salon Bandit Scout Out a La Grange Target?

Police reports indicate that the man arrested in Elmhurst for as many as 15 robberies in Cook and DuPage counties may have tested the waters at La Grange's Salon Hype.

UPDATED, Feb. 7, 5:25 p.m.: After reviewing video taken of the suspicious person reported at Salon Hype, La Grange Police Department investigators say that "there is nothing to indicate" that the person was Jason Logsdon, but have not ruled out the possibility. -- Three days before his arrest Monday in Elmhurst, Jason Logsdon, 41, the Evanston man accused of committing as many as 15 robberies in the Chicagoland area, almost exclusively of hair salons, may have been scouting a potential target in La Grange. According to La Grange Police Department reports, a suspicious person matching Logsdon's description was reported in La Grange's Salon Hype at 4:29 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1. The person was reportedly asking questions about the salon's …

Ask a Stylist: What Hairstyle is in this Holiday Season?

In the latest edition of Patch's "Ask a Stylist" series, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei tackles hairstyles for the holiday season.

Every so often on Patch, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei answers a question about the ubiquitous discussion topic that is our hair.  Got a question for Ross? Email it to joe.odonnell@patch.com. Question: What's in for holiday hair in 2012? Answer: Holiday hair is fun and 60s inspired this season. With this look you definitely want to show off your neck line and shoulders. Hair is off the face slightly, teased on top, and pulled back into a pony tail. With the pony tail, there are a couple of options. It can be curled, and I'm talking about spiral, large loose curls, or the pony tail can be loosely braided down off the front of one shoulder. I recommend visiting your local beauty supply store and look for clip-in hair pieces. These are …

Ask a Stylist: How Can Men Cover Their Gray Without Going to the Salon?

In the latest edition of Patch's "Ask a Stylist" series, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei gives advice to women whose men want to color their hair, but may bit a bit proud.

Every so often on Patch, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei answers a question about the ubiquitous discussion topic that is our hair.  Got a question for Ross? Email it to joe.odonnell@patch.com. Question: My husband is getting gray and he'd really like to cover it, but I know it would be difficult to get him to even be seen getting haircolor in a salon. Help! Answer: I've got great news! L'Oreal Professional offers a quick and easy discreet color service for men. It can be done at the shampoo bowl and to everyone in the salon it just looks like you are getting shampooed. It takes five minutes or less, and it's called "Cover 5."  Depending on the shade your haircare professional chooses, Cover 5 can what we call smudge hype gray, that means…

Ask a Stylist: Should I Color My Hair Before a Holiday Vacation or After?

In the latest edition of Patch's "Ask a Stylist" series, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei gives insight on the best time to treat your hair around a holiday vacation.

Every so often on Patch, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei answers a question about the ubiquitous discussion topic that is our hair.  Got a question for Ross? Email it to joe.odonnell@patch.com. Question: With the holidays approaching and many people getting away to the beach for vacation, should you get your hair colored and treated before you leave, or wait until you return? Answer: We get this question all the time—especially now! Most people think they should get their hair colored when they come back. But the truth of the matter is you have so much fading and bleaching from the sun that if you wait until you get back to fix it, it's a lot more trouble and expense. Fresh hair color holds up so much better in the sun and is much more …

Dry, Dull Hair—What to Do?

With one of the hottest summers we've seen in years, Ross Bartolomei, owner of Salon Hype in La Grange, is giving us tips on how to survive summer in style.

Style Tip: For a great at-home tip, one of my favorite things to do is use pure Aloe Vera gel on dry, dull hair.  Apply it to clean hair, and comb through.  Let the Aloe Vera work for 20 minutes or more before rinsing out.  The result is smoother, shiny more manageable hair. —Ross Bartolomei, owner, Salon Hype, La Grange

Deconstructed Braids—A Low Maintenance Summer Hair Style

With one of the hottest summers we've seen in years, Ross Bartolomei, owner of Salon Hype in La Grange, is giving us tips on how to survive summer in style.

Style Tip: Deconstructed braids - a hairstyle that will beat the summer heat With your hair wet, create two braids with a part down the center.  Let dry completely (even overnight) before taking out the braids. Once the braids are out, loosen gently, but do not comb. The result is a fantastic, beachy summer look.  This look can be casual or dressed up for a special occasion or party. —Ross Bartolomei, owner, Salon Hype, La Grange

How to Control Curls in Heat and Humidity

With one of the hottest summers we've seen in years, Ross Bartolomei, owner of Salon Hype in La Grange, is giving us tips on how to survive summer in style.

Style Tip: Embrace your curls!  You may not know it, but all the women walking around with straight, flat hair are really jealous of your curls.  Keeping curl definition is key. One of the ways to do this is to refresh your curls with a product that I love called Shu Uemura Depsea Foundation Spray.  Divide your hair into 10 sections, then spray and twist each section and let them dry.  The effect is a tamed ringlet that gives you more control and a calmer curl that stands up to humidity. —Ross Bartolomei, owner, Salon Hype, La Grange

I have natural curly hair and Susan At Elysium is my saviour! She takes extra time to talk about what I want and always has ideas and suggestions. She does not rush through my services and doesn't push products down my throat. If she recommends something- I can totally trust it.   more ›

Salon Hype: Natural Looking and Slightly Untamed Hair is the Look this Spring

Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei says soft, natural hair with a bit of wild streak is the look that's in this spring.

With the early arrival of spring this year, downtown La Grange is already looking like a runway show. A walk by shops and restaurants along La Grange Road reveals spring fashion has arrived as well, modeled by La Grange residents who are excited to forget winter and move on to summer. If you want to look right this spring, the top is a good place to start, suggests Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei. "Everything is about nature right now," Bartolomei said and suggested La Grange women consider a softer, natural look for this season if they're considering a change. "We're seeing a kind of '50s and '70s mixed thing right now." Whether you want to go short or long, Bartolomei said, the look is natural with a bit of a wild side. This is a change…

Two Burr Ridge Businesses Bucking Downward Economic Trends

Salon Hype and Capri have been showing steady growth in unsteady times.

The current economy has hit many small businesses hard. On Tuesday, Clarendon Hills-based gourmet restaurant Maijean announced that its New Year's Eve dinner service will be it's last. "The only reason we have for our closing is … the unstable economy,” said restaurant representatives in an email to Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills Patch. Amongst news that businesses are struggling, two Burr Ridge small business owners are showing steady growth and have even announced plans to expand. Ristorante Capri, in County Line Square, is a 26-year-old family-owned business run by brothers Gigi, Robert and Filippo Rovito. The restaurant specializes in homestyle cooking from the Calabria region of southern Italy. The restaurant currently has three locations …

Cool Tips for Hot Headed Style

Hair care is another one of those pesky little issues that always pops up this time of year. That darn humidity!

I love the look of a modern, side-swept bang across one's forehead. But, lately I have seen this universally flattering hairstyle morph into a crazy, frizzy fringe or even worse, a limp "plastered against the skin" oil slick. Not so attractive.   Two things can help.  First and foremost, you need a really good haircut by a really good stylist.  Lucky for us, top-notch hair salons abound here in La Grange and in our neighboring Hinsdale and Western Springs.  No need to go downtown for a great haircut.  Not anymore!   Second, we need to switch to some different hair products that are specifically formulated to combat the unfortunate tendency toward limp or frizzy during the summer months. You have probably noticed that a change in shampoo …
