8A Football: LT Fumbles Away Game to Mount Carmel

Mount Carmel 45, Lyons 10. The game was tied at the half, but turnovers doomed LT in the Class 8A quarterfinals.

A competitive game at halftime turned into a blowout quickly in the second half as Mount Carmel forced three fumbles in a row and won 45-10 over Lyons Township in the Class 8A quarterfinals.  LT went ahead 10-7 on a 1-yard Matt Harris touchdown run, but Mount Carmel was able to tie the game with a late field goal to close out the half.  At times Lyons looked like it could drive down the field on the Caravan, but too many dropped passes plagued the team. Jemari Burks fumbled the opening kickoff in the second half, and Harris muffed the next one. Both were recovered by Mount Carmel and the Caravan converted them into Matt Domer touchdown runs to go up 24-10 within the first 1:07 of the third quarter.  The Lions couldn't recover after that. …

The last time Lyons Township's football team faced Mount Carmel, it was a 41-10 loss in the Class 8A quarterfinals in 2010.  Two years later, the teams meet again in the same class and the same round, only this time it's at LT.  If you can't make the game, you can watch it live on Patch, courtesy of High School Cube. The game starts at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, and is at Bennett Field in Western Springs.  Who do you think will win? Tell us your prediction in the comments!  Another difference this season: In 2012, Lyons was 8-1 in the regular season; this year, the Lions fought back from a 2-4 start and have won five straight games. Lions Roar Past Eagles At Home

The 10-1 Lyons football team battles back in front of capacity crowd, advances to class 8A quarterfinals.

"I want to thank all the fans, really," Lyons Township junior running back Jaime Jones said. "The support they give us is a really big part of our success. Hearing them in the stands is always a kick start to our adrenaline." Jones, along with the entire LTHS football team, fueled off of strong fan support in the Lions' second round home playoff victory over Carl Sandburg High School, 21-20. With temperatures hovering around freezing, dedicated LT faithful saw their team grind out its tenth win of the season to advance to the IHSA class 8A quarterfinal game next week against powerhouse Mount Carmel, ranked No. 7 by the Chicago Tribune's PrepsPlus section going into the playoffs.
