Lyons Township junior Matt Harris was second in long jump and junior Lino Mogorovic was fifth in the 300 hurdles at the Class 3A boys track state meet while the LT girls soccer won its first conference title since 2006 and first outright title since 2000.
Lyons Township junior Matt Harris had an outdoor lifetime-best long jump at the Class 3A boys track state meet. Harris also nearly captured a state championship. Harris’ distance of 23 feet-8 1/2 inches earned second place May 26 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, just four inches behind Wheaton North junior Zach Gordon’s state title 24-1/2. LT junior Lino Mogorovic also earned all-state honors by taking fifth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 39.37 seconds fully-automatic time. “The only thing we really need to work on (for Harris next year in long jump) is his being consistent in his approach, and, more importantly, his finish,” said LT assistant coach Sheldon Harris, who oversees the jumpers. “His finish is what made …

Lyons Township senior Colleen Connors nearly reaches the finals of the Class 4A Three-Point Showdown while the LT boys gymnastics team begins its season and the indoor track teams post strong times at the Mustang Relays.
Lyons Township senior Colleen Connors had a strong showing at the Class 4A girls basketball Country Financial Three-Point Showdown preliminaries March 1 at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena in Normal. It nearly was even more successful. Connors made 9 of 15 attempts to tie for 10th place among the 32 entries that had qualified with top-four finishes in four previous rounds prior to regional and sectional games. Four players advanced to the championship round March 2. If Connors had made 10, she would have been in a three-player shootout with six other players for the final advancing qualifying spot. “Nine of out 15 shots made is phenomenal—that’s more than 50 percent. And she knows how tough it was to advance to the next round,” LT…

The Lyons Township boys indoor track team takes fifth at the Proviso West Invite but only seven points from first place while the boys swimming team concludes its season at the state meet preliminaries.
Last season, the Lyons Township boys indoor track team won the varsity level of the prestigious Proviso West Invitational for the only time in the meet’s 46-year history. The Lions nearly pulled it off again Saturday. LT finished fifth in the 12-team field with 60 points but was just seven points behind champion Neuqua Valley, which prevailed by one point over defending Class 3A outdoor state champion Lake Park. York (64 points) and Wheaton North (63) were third and fourth. “(Our meet was) hit and miss, and to see that we’re only seven points out kind of reinforces the fact that there were some small things we should have taken care of going into this meet to be mentally focused,” LT coach Mike Danner said. “We had the ability to be up …

Lyons Township freshman Kelsy Kurfirst shared the state title on the uneven parallel bars at the girls gymnastics state finals to become just the third individual champion in program history, while the Lions finished sixth as a team while the boys indoor
Perhaps it was just coincidence that 1985 Lyons Township graduate Janne Klepek was inducted into the Illinois High School Girls Gymnastics Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame Saturday afternoon. That night, freshman Kelsy Kurfirst added her name to LT gymnastics state history in a big way. Kurfirst became just the program’s third individual state champion as she shared first place on the uneven parallel bars at the state meet event finals at Palatine High School. Kurfirst’s 9.6 tied for first place with Glenbard North senior Amanda Quinn among the 11 finalists who had advanced by being among the top 10 scores in Friday’s preliminaries. Kurfirst had scored a 9.625 for the second-highest advancing score. “She’s amazing—exclamation point, …

Matt Harris, Emma Haugen, Makayla Hubbard, Sarah Kreikemeier, Lino Mogorovic and Stephanie Mogorovic achieve All-America honors with top-eight finishes at the USA Track & Field National Junior Olympic Championships in Wichita, Kansas.
Recent Lyons Township graduate Stephanie Mogorovic of Western Springs was elated to compete with the Zephyrs Track Club for the first time at the USA Track & Field National Junior Olympic Championships July 26-31 in Wichita, Kansas. Her only event was supposed to be the 1,600-meter relay in the Young Women age group for 17- and 18-year-olds. Then she also was thrown into the 3,200 relay as the first alternate when recent LT graduate Simone Bunsen injured her hamstring competing in the heptathlon. “I was in shock. I was kind of panicking and everyone was like, ‘Steph, you need to calm down. You’re going to do fine,’” Mogorovic said. “After about an hour, I was like, ‘It’s not a big deal. I can do it.’” Mogorovic more than held her own. She …
