Lyons Township freshman badminton player Stephanie Lin and boys gymnasts Jon Brandt, Dan Gallagher, Noah Mennemeier and Chris Rediehs earned berths to their respective state meets.
Freshman Stephanie Lin completed a strong start to her first Lyons Township badminton season with some strong finishes at the state meet. Lin earned the Lions’ lone berth to state May 11-12 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston by finishing third in singles at the Thornton Fractional South Sectional May 3. Lin had a 2-2 record in the 64-player, double-elimination state bracket, winning both of her matches in three games after losing the first game. “She did a great job for her first trip to state,” LT coach Sue McClenahan said. “Stephanie played really well, but does lack some conditioning needed for a big tournament like the state meet. Lyons Township senior Colleen Connors nearly reaches the finals of the Class 4A Three-Point Showdown while the LT boys gymnastics team begins its season and the indoor track teams post strong times at the Mustang Relays.
Lyons Township senior Colleen Connors had a strong showing at the Class 4A girls basketball Country Financial Three-Point Showdown preliminaries March 1 at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena in Normal. It nearly was even more successful. Connors made 9 of 15 attempts to tie for 10th place among the 32 entries that had qualified with top-four finishes in four previous rounds prior to regional and sectional games. Throughout his years coaching boys and girls gymnastics at Lyons Township High School, Fred Dryanski found a way to instill humor no matter the situation. “He brought fun into the gym,” recalled Sam Zeman, Dryanski’s longtime boys gymnastics assistant coach. “When kids were getting too serious or frustrated, he came up with some comment that would make them want to shake their heads and be like, ‘What?’ It would kind of reset them and they’d be ready to go.” Dryanski, 63, who died Sunday, maintained that positive attitude throughout his many battles with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Lois, whom he married following a lengthy courtship. Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 9, at the Palos-Gaidas Funeral Home, 11028 S. …
