Lipinski Meets with Local Group, Supports Some Gun-Control Measures

The Congressman (D-3rd District-Western Springs) said he supports universal background checks, restricting magazine sizes and making trafficking a federal crime.

The following is a press release from an currently unnamed local group of mothers, approved by the office of Congressman Lipinski. Twelve citizens of Western Springs and La Grange, all mothers of young children, met with Congressman Dan Lipinski on Friday, Feb. 8. They expressed their concern about gun violence and urged the congressman to support gun violence prevention measures including restricting assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines, requiring universal background checks for all gun purchases and making gun trafficking a federal crime. The group also gave Rep. Lipinski petitions with more than 125 signatures of his constituents asking him to support President Obama’s proposals to reduce gun violence. Western Springs …

Gordon Park Bids Approved, But Village and District Still Deadlocked

The continuing fight over Gordon Park has again been tabled after a plan commission meeting on Feb. 12 failed to resolve a key dispute.

Thought the Park District of La Grange Board has worked through its concerns and approved $2.1 million in improvements to Gordon Park, any breaking of ground remains stalled after a Feb. 12 plan-commission meeting left a land dispute unresolved, The Doings La Grange reports. According to the Chicago Tribune, the District is seeking special-use permits for improvements like a band shell and skating area in the park, which the Village refuses to grant unless the District cedes a small strip of land north of Ogden Avenue; the District calls that “inappropriate.” The District’s main concern, reports The Doings, is the uncertainty of the mess left when Atlantic Realty Partners abandoned plans to rebuild on the former YMCA west of the park, …

The Park District of La Grange and the Village of La Grange , once again, are costing the tax payers a lot of money because we are funding two separate entities. WE the taxpayer own this property , yet We the Taxpayer will basically be selling or ceding something WE OWN to ourselves and WE will be paying for it . Find a Pet-Sitter Around La Grange/Western Springs

A request for a local pet-sitter turned into one of the most popular posts on the La Grange Patch and Western Springs Patch Facebook pages.

We at La Grange Patch and Western Springs Patch were rather taken by surprise when our Facebook call-out for at-home pet-sitters in the area got a bucketload of responses. All we were looking for was a sitter for Emily Logue, whose beagle really doesn't care for kennels, but we got so many responses that it made sense to compile them into an article! If you're heading out of town and need someone to look after your pooch, kitty or other furry/feathered/fishy/other friend, try any of the following: Did we miss yours, or your favorites? What Failing La Grange/Western Springs Bridges Would Obama's Program Target?

In his 2013 State of the Union Address Tuesday, President Barack Obama proposed a "Fix it First" plan that may affect the Lyons Township area. Find out what local bridges are obsolete and which are failing.

President Barack Obama proposed Tuesday night what he called a "Fix It First" program to address the nation's crumbling infrastructure—like roads and bridges—in an effort to improve citizens' quality of life and bring jobs to the United States. "I propose a 'Fix-It-First' program to put people to work as soon as possible on our most urgent repairs, like the nearly 70,000 structurally deficient bridges across the country," he said during the State of the Union Address. "And to make sure taxpayers don’t shoulder the whole burden, I’m also proposing a Partnership to Rebuild America that attracts private capital to upgrade what our businesses need most—modern ports to move goods; modern pipelines to withstand a storm; modern schools worthy of …

Darren, What is the definition of these terms? Why is the Ogden bridge over 294 "functionally obselete"? It safely carries all those cars over 294 safely every day, has no potholes, never has a backup...perhaps because it's not a toll bridge? (that last part is a joke). Really, why? Also, if a bridge is "structurally deficient", why is it even open for business? This smells like a lawsuit waiting…   more ›

La Grange Board Preparing for Chance of Medical Marijuana Shop

The Board took steps towards regulating the placement and operation of such a distribution center if Illinois House Bill 30 comes to pass.

The La Grange Board of Trustees approved a resolution Monday that would revise the Village zoning code to allow and regulate the placement and operation of a medical-marijuana center, The Doings La Grange reports.  According to the paper, House Bill 30, currently moving forward in Springfield, would create a mandatory center in each state senate district—La Grange has three—though bar them from being within 2,500 feet of a school, like most of the La Grange downtown. “This is not an opt-out program,” the paper quoted Trustee Bill Holder saying. “If this bill gets passed, there would be one center per district, so we should definitely be out in front of this.” The board also finalized a program for electrical-aggregation, including an …

La Grange, Metra Sued in 2012 Fatal Train/Car Crash

The wrongful-death lawsuit alleges that the Gilbert Avenue crossing gates trapped the 57-year-old Chicago woman's car on the tracks, leading to the crash.

A lawsuit filed Wednesday seeking more than $150,000 accuses Metra and the Village of La Grange of liability in the Feb. 2012 train-versus-car crash that killed a 57-year-old Chicago woman, the The Doings La Grange reports. According to the paper, the administrator to the estate of Maria G. Hinojosa is claiming negligence in the operation of the crossing gates and signals at Gilbert Avenue, where Hinojosa's car was struck by an eastbound Metra train. The suit claims that Hinojosa's car was trapped between the warning gates, the paper said. Such a claim contradicts a finding by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office that the crash was an intentional suicide. The train's conductor, who the paper said is also blamed in the lawsuit, has …

Did the Hair-Salon Bandit Scout Out a La Grange Target?

Police reports indicate that the man arrested in Elmhurst for as many as 15 robberies in Cook and DuPage counties may have tested the waters at La Grange's Salon Hype.

UPDATED, Feb. 7, 5:25 p.m.: After reviewing video taken of the suspicious person reported at Salon Hype, La Grange Police Department investigators say that "there is nothing to indicate" that the person was Jason Logsdon, but have not ruled out the possibility. -- Three days before his arrest Monday in Elmhurst, Jason Logsdon, 41, the Evanston man accused of committing as many as 15 robberies in the Chicagoland area, almost exclusively of hair salons, may have been scouting a potential target in La Grange. According to La Grange Police Department reports, a suspicious person matching Logsdon's description was reported in La Grange's Salon Hype at 4:29 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1. The person was reportedly asking questions about the salon's …

Corner Shop in La Grange Reopens with New Look and Model

The former consignment store on Calendar Court is now operating as an expansion of the Carousel Shop, with several new offerings and cheaper prices.

La Grange’s Corner Shop has a new look, a new business model, new merchandise and even a new smell. Corner Shop just completed a two-week renovation and has reopened with a different approach, selling exclusively donated items, including used books and furniture—hence the new wood smell. “I think that, especially in this economy, it functions better for customers,” said manager Lisa Carullo. “It makes better business sense for us: We can raise more money for Community Nurse, [and] our prices are lower.”  Along with sister store the Carousel Shop, two doors down on Calendar Court, the Corner Shop is a fundraising outlet for the nearby Community Nurse Health Center which provides medical services for people with limited resources. Formerly, …

Photo Gallery: Hockey and Skating in Gilbert Park, Pre-Super Bowl

Skaters of all ages take to the rinks before the Big Game on Sunday to slap around pucks or just enjoy the ice.

The Gilbert Park ice rinks may have gotten off to a slightly slow start this winter, but the cold snap at the end of last week had them ready for action on Super Bowl Sunday, and plenty of locals—parents, teens and tykes—were out taking advantage of the freeze. With the friendly green flag flying, hockey players dueled at shinny up and down the rinks while others practiced their wrist shots and puck-handling. Other skaters casually cruised around the rink, with some of the youngest getting some of their first experience on blades. Patch dropped by with a camera; check out our photo gallery above! I can confirm that hockey players were definitely far more prevalent on both rinks. Most of the free skating was actually being done on the north half of the "hockey" rink.   more ›
