A request for a local pet-sitter turned into one of the most popular posts on the La Grange Patch and Western Springs Patch Facebook pages.
We at La Grange Patch and Western Springs Patch were rather taken by surprise when our Facebook call-out for at-home pet-sitters in the area got a bucketload of responses. All we were looking for was a sitter for Emily Logue, whose beagle really doesn't care for kennels, but we got so many responses that it made sense to compile them into an article! One hearing after his pro se motion was granted, John L. Wilson received 2,600 pages of discovery documents Wednesday. His request to have his hands freed from cuffs during future proceedings will be considered in March.
The man charged with the 2011 murder of 14-year-old Lyons Township student Kelli O’Laughlin was back in court Wednesday morning, and during the first hearing since a granted pro se motion allowed John L. Wilson to represent himself, signed for thousands of pages worth of documents a defendant's lawyer would typically hold. Wilson, dressed in a yellow and green jumpsuit and surrounded by several armed guards, signed with cuffed hands four receipts acknowledging the state's turnover of about 2,600 pages of discovery documents to the defendant. The pages will be transported by law enforcement officers to the Pontiac, IL, prison housing Wilson. The Lithuanian couple were married for 60 years; the man’s artwork is now preserved in a photo book published by a neighbor.
The myriad works of Zigmas Brazis, a sculptor who passed away in 2010, remain a daily reminder of him to his wife as they sit in his widow Valentia’s Indian Head Park backyard; though many are in decay, they will be preserved in a new photo book published by a neighbor, The Doings Western Springs reports. Neighbor Rebecca Minton, an art therapist at Glenoaks Therapeutic Day School, put together the book as “something [Valentia] can take with her” if she must ever leave the house and its sculptures, the paper said. By nearly a 2-1 margin, voters chose to let their Villages negotiate for better electricity rates.
The Village of La Grange and the Village of Indian Head Park will now be able to bargain as collective units for better electricity rates (for residents who do not opt out) after a referendum on Tuesday's ballot passed by a margin of nearly 2-1. In La Grange, the referendum passed with 4,301 residents voting in favor (65.39 percent) and 34.61 percent voting against (34.61 percent). In Indian Head Park, the margin was slightly less: 1,227 residents voted in favor (63.87 percent) and 694 residents against (36.13 percent.) County-wide, 15 other towns passed electrical-aggregation measures (17 total), while such measures failed in four towns (Alsip, Blue Island, Elmwood Park and Lynwood).

John L. Wilson, Jr., the man charged with the brutal murder of 14-year-old Lyons Township freshman Kelli O'Laughlin, is scheduled to appear in court next month for a status hearing. The case against the Chicago man, who had been out on parole at the time he burglarized the teen's Indian Head Park home, has progressed slowly. Wilson was taken into custody on November 2, 2011, six days after prosecutors say he stabbed the teen to death. He was charged with first-degree murder. On a Saturday night exactly one year after a girl’s murder stunned the Lyons Township community, residents gathered to remember dedicate a new memorial.
On October 27, 2011, the horrific murder of teenager Kelli O’Laughlin roiled the Lyons Township community, precipitating a yearlong outpouring that shows no sign of waning. On October 27, 2012, hundreds of community members flooded tiny Sacajawea Park in northwest Indian Head Park to dedicate a new memorial beside Kelli’s Playground, as the park’s structure has now been officially renamed. It was Kelli’s—and her family’s—name for the park, which is just about as old as Kelli would have been. The memorial consists of a plaque, a bench and an eastern redbud tree, which will flower in the bright purple that has become a symbol for Kelli’s memory. Indian Head Park police and a Willowbrook canine unit responded to a noise disturbance on Tuesday morning and made multiple drug arrests.
An officer of the Indian Head Park Police Department responded to a noise complaint in a Village condominium parking lot at about 2:25 a.m. Monday morning and, after smelling an odor of marijuana from a car, ended up charging a Countryside 18-year-old man for possession of cocaine (and marijuana and drug paraphernalia) after help from a Willowbrook canine unit, The Doings Western Springs reports. An Oak Park 19-year-old man was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, and a boy and a girl of unspecified towns were issued citations for violating curfew. Marlies Perthel, village manager for La Grange from '93 to '04, passed away on Dec. 5.
Flags at the Village of La Grange will be flown at half-staff for the next few days in remembrance of former village manager, Marlies Perthel. Perthel, of Indian Head Park, passed away on Monday, Dec. 5. A visitation will be held at Hallowell and James Funeral Home, 1025 W. 55th St., Countryside, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. today. A funeral will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at Christ Church of Oak Brook. Before coming to La Grange, Perthel was a former executive secretary for Spiegel & Co. and a former assistant clerk for the Village of Indian Head Park.
