Helping Hand Regroups after Fire, Flood Devastate Shop

The organization, which promotes independence for people with disabilities, is looking for new sites to send the three employees and 25 volunteers who worked at the Brookfield shop.

It seemed that things couldn’t get much worse Thursday after five feet of water from the torrential storms flooded into the Helping Hand Thrift Shop in Brookfield. But at about 11 p.m., a fire started in the shop, the proceeds of which benefit the Helping Hand Center for people with disabilities. “It completely wiped out pretty much the entire shop,” said Julie Bosso, director of marketing for the Countryside-based nonprofit. The physical loss of the community’s generous donations is tough, Bosso said. But the real tragedy, she said, is how the fire stripped away a shop that served as a second home for three employees and 25 volunteers, most of whom have developmental disabilities. “The thing we hold very dear is that it served as a …

Prairie Grass Burn Starts Soon at La Grange Country Club

Smoke and fire will appear at the La Grange Country Club anytime between March 29 and May 1 as part of a prescribed burn.

Smoke will soon rise from the landscape of the La Grange Country Club, but that’s all part of a plan, according to a notice from Tallgrass Restoration. The ecological restoration company will be burning prairie grass at the club sometime between March 29 and May 1, the notice said. The fire will be a controlled burn conducted following Illinois Environmental Protection Agency rules. Trained Tallgrass staff will carry out the fire, ensuring that flames don’t spread where they shouldn’t. Tallgrass requires the wide window of possible dates because it must set the fires only under ideal weather conditions. Prairie grass burns help maintain healthy growth, benefiting both the plants themselves and animals who rely on them, according to the …

The cause of the fire, which took place in southeast Hinsdale, is unknown at this point, a fire department release said.

What Was That Smoke Plume to the South on Sunday?

Answer: a controlled burn in the Cook County Forest Preserve along La Grange Road.

If following the Chicago Bears' 51-20 shellacking of the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, you happened to wander outside of a home in the La Grange/Western Springs area and looked to the south, you might have noticed a massive plume of smoke rising high into the afternoon sky not too far away. We noticed, too—so we went and had a look. Turned out there was a predicated controlled burn being conducted by the Cook County Forest Preserve in the area around Suttonbush Slough, west of La Grange Road and south of 95th Street. (The area is also called Pulaski Woods and the Cranberry Slough Nature Preserve, and is part of the Paw Paw Woods Nature Preseve, according to Google Maps.) The flames were actually really impressive; the burn came all the way …

New Equipment to Arrive at Elm Park to Replace Fire Damaged Playground

The Park District of La Grange could start installing the new playground at Elm Park as soon as Aug. 13. A fire destroyed much of the playground earlier in July.

The Park District of La Grange has announced that new playground equipment for Elm Park has been ordered and is on its way. On July 8, at about 11:05 p.m., the La Grange Fire Department was alerted to a fire at the park, possibly caused by fireworks. The fire subsequently caused $75,000 worth of damage to playground equipment as the blaze melted about half of the playground and burned woodchips. Dean Bissias, executive director of the park district, said he expects the new equipment for the playground to be delivered by Aug. 9 with installation beginning by Aug. 13 at the earliest. "We're replacing the equipment exactly as it was," Bissias said. Bissias said the park district did not have an exact timeline for how long the installation …

When firefighters arrived at the home on Ashland Avenue, residents were attempting to get their property out of the garage. Fighting the fire was momentarily delayed over concern that live wires on an overhead electrical line may have been damaged. After the situation was assessed, both fires were fought with water from …

La Grange Park: Automatic Fire Alarm System Gives Firefighters Early Warning on Sunday

The La Grange Park Fire Department was given early warning of a possible fire at Fifth-Third Bank on Sunday night thanks to the village's automatic fire alarm system.

La Grange Park Fire Chief Dean Maggos credited the village's automatic fire alarm system with giving firefighters early warning of a possible fire at Fifth-Third Bank, 454 Sherwood Ave., in La Grange Park. Upon arrival at the bank at 5:22 p.m. on Sunday night, firefighters could not see any apparent problems within. After gaining access to the bank, firefighters discovered a smoke detector had been activated near a basement mechanical room. Firefighters found smoke coming from burning and melting electrical cords, and shut down power to prevent further overheating. The village's automatic fire alarm system is connected directly to the fire department. Even though no personnel were in the building, Maggos said in a press release, the system…
