La Grange Park Potters Sculpt Against Hunger

The upcoming Empty Bowls event put on by the pottery studio raised $6,400 for local food pantries in 2012.

Volunteers at Village Potters in La Grange Park spent eight hours on Saturday sculpting and throwing as part of the Empty Bowls project to raise money and awareness for local hunger-relief organizations, The Doings La Grange reports. According to the paper, after a second bowl-a-thon session on March 10, pottery will be sold at the main annual Empty Bowls event on May 9, which raised $6,400 for area food pantries in 2012. More information is available at the Village Potters website, according to which, “the basic premise is simple: Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others work with the community to create handcrafted bowls... In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls …

With over 700 bowls awaiting donors on Thursday night at the Empty Bowls event in La Grange Park, there was a little something for everyone. Laid out on tables at Village Potters, 333 N. La Grange Rd., members of the community looking to support a good cause picked over handmade bowls crafted by Village Potters, students at Lyons Township High School and members of the First United Methodist Church and First Congregational Church of La Grange.
