Free Comic Book Day: 5 Titles to Get at Chimera's Comics

The La Grange comic shop has a bunch of free comics to celebrate this Saturday, May 4, including Superman, The Walking Dead and more.

If you are a fan of comic books or want to encourage children to read the original form of The Avengers, Spiderman, Batman and more, you'll be happy to hear that Free Comic Book Day is May 4. Free Comic Book Day, created in 2002, always falls on the first Saturday in May. Participating comic book specialty stores across America give away at least one free comic book to anyone who visits their shop that day.  Retailers, publishers, suppliers and distributors work together to make certain comics free in an effort to reward comic book veterans and draw in new fans on this day. In La Grange, Chimera's Comics will offer free comics from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. See the photos above for some of the popular titles expected to go quickly.  Chimera's also…

Chimera’s Comics Pilots Year of Near-Constant Charity Drives

The La Grange comic shop hopes to replicate success from its December toy drive with a winter clothing drive and a regular series of future charitable events to follow.

When La Grange’s Chimera’s Comics finished its December holiday toy drive for charity, store co-owner Carmelo Chimera tried to take a picture of the accumulated gifts—and found there were too many to fit in a single snapshot. The community response outpaced his wildest expectations, Chimera said, which bodes well for his larger vision: holding some type of charity drive at pretty much every time of the year.  “We always wanted to do charitable things through the store ever since we opened, and it’s something that unfortunately took us a while to get off the ground,” Chimera said. “But now that we’ve been open so long and have such a loyal customer base and a loyal community to support it. … Ideally, I’d love to do something every month.” …

The Dark Knight Rises at Chimera's Comics in La Grange

Are you as excited as the guys at Chimera's Comics in La Grange about the new Batman movie, 'Dark Knight Rises?' You'll want to attend their red carpet premiere party on Saturday, July 21.

Even if you go see the third installment of Christopher Nolan's epic Batman franchise, Dark Knight Rises, at a midnight screening on Thursday night, you might also want to think about seeing it again this Saturday. That's just what Carmelo Chimera is doing. Chimera, the owner of Chimera's Comics, 19 S. La Grange Rd., is holding a special red carpet Batman premiere party on Saturday, July 21 at the store to celebrate the film's release this week. But even Chimera can't wait that long. "I'm going at midnight on Thursday—regardless of what that means for my morning." Chimera said. "Yeah, I'm going to see it twice." If you can wait—and even if you can't—there's good reason to go again on Saturday with a stop by the comic shop first. The party …

Chimera's Comics Celebrates Free Comic Book Day

Hanging out with Steve Brown and Carmelo Chimera at Chimera's Comics in La Grange for Free Comic Book Day.

The turnout for Free Comic Book Day at Chimera's Comics in La Grange was proof of how far the store has come in year, owner Steve Brown said on Saturday. Brown and his business partner Carmelo Chimera opened to a line of customers already waiting at the door for the event. Over the course of the day, they estimated that 500 people walked through their doors to grab free comic books, pick up new merchandise, and hang out with other comic book fans. The store was packed at 2:30 p.m., as Chimera and Brown ran around helping customers find new material. "Do you have any comics about politics?" a customer asked Brown. He pointed out a graphic novel called Ex Machina. "There's really something for everyone," Brown said of comic book themes. In …

Spider-Man Comic Found in Attic Worth Over $10,000

First appearance of Spider-Man in 'Amazing Fantasy #15' found in stack of old comic books stored in attic.

Little did a young George Toman know when he bought an Amazing Fantasy comic book for about a dime in the late '60s that it would end up being worth over $10,000. Toman was cleaning out his attic on a recent weekend at his home in Willow Springs when we rediscovered a box of old comic books that had previously been stored at his mom's house. Toman, who works as a software analyst at Xerox, said he was in disbelief when the owners of Chimera's Comics, located in downtown La Grange, told him what it was worth. "It was quite a surprise," Toman said. "I was in disbelief." He wasn't the only one. "People bring in comic books all the time," said Carmelo Chimera, owner of Chimera's Comics. "Rarely do we get to give someone as good of news as that…

Good article, but the character is named "Spider-Man", not "Spiderman". The hyphen was used in the name so as to differentiate the cover/title from a certain popular DC character who also wears red & blue and has a "S_ _ erman" name.   more ›
