The Village has approved a detailed schematic for bettering its relationship with its businesses, attracting new ones and improving business prospects overall.
A commercial revitalization plan passed by the La Grange Park Board of Trustees in January promises that the Village will begin taking a number of steps to make La Grange Park more commerce-friendly and to better serve the Village’s approximately 100 businesses. The plan includes a list of nearly 40 action-items for the Village to take—some already completed, others extremely long-term—and levels them based on immediacy in an “implementation matrix.” Items on the list range from the simple (hold more ribbon-cuttings and send press releases, attend Village meetings and industry events, better use e-briefs and the Rose Clippings newsletter to promote businesses) to the complex and far-off (develop a marketing campaign for Village businesses…

In the latest edition of Patch's "Ask a Stylist" series, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei tackles hairstyles for the holiday season.
Every so often on Patch, Salon Hype owner Ross Bartolomei answers a question about the ubiquitous discussion topic that is our hair. Got a question for Ross? Email it to joe.odonnell@patch.com. Question: What's in for holiday hair in 2012? Answer: Holiday hair is fun and 60s inspired this season. With this look you definitely want to show off your neck line and shoulders. Hair is off the face slightly, teased on top, and pulled back into a pony tail. With the pony tail, there are a couple of options. It can be curled, and I'm talking about spiral, large loose curls, or the pony tail can be loosely braided down off the front of one shoulder. I recommend visiting your local beauty supply store and look for clip-in hair pieces. These are …

The structure, built in 1951, was torn down last week; a property manager for the lot says there are many options for what might go in the space.
The former site of an Original Pancake House on La Grange Road that closed in 2007 was leveled last week in order to make room for potential new commercial development in La Grange Park, the Doings La Grange reports. Although there was much interest in the one-story building, according to the paper, it was ultimately unattractive to tenants because it lacked handicap accessibility, modern sprinklers and an elevator to the basement. “Now one of our prime goals is to have people come by and have a vision for what the site could be," Peter Barritt, property manager for TBZ Realty & Management Corp, told the paper. "It’s not locked into the most recent use... We don’t know at this point.” Read the full story at the Doings Western Springs …
Jim Gillespie started real estate career at Gallery of Homes, then Thorsen, when bought by Coldwell Banker.
Jim Gillespie, chief executive officer of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, headed back July 23 to La Grange where he started his real estate career 37 years ago. He worked as an agent for Gallery of Homes and then Thorsen Realtors, which was bought by Coldwell Banker. When Tricia McEneaney-Riberto, managing director of the La Grange office, learned Gillespie would be in the Chicago area for the Coldwell Banker Expo, she invited him to the office. In his CBUedge.com blog, Gillespie wrote that he walked into the office to the sound of his University of Illinois fight song; Fighting Illini and Chicago White Sox flags were flying and he was greeted by Elizabeth Asperger, La Grange president. “I saw some old friends, drove by the …
An amusement tax is being considered by trustees in La Grange on ticket sales at the La Grange Theatre.
Trustees in La Grange are considering revisiting the issue of whether to add an amusement tax to ticket sales at the La Grange Theatre, 84 S. La Grange Rd., to help raise revenue for the village in a way that wouldn’t target residents with the assumption being many patrons of the La Grange Theatre do not live in La Grange. The issue has been brought up several times during budget discussions in recent meetings by Trustee Michael Horvath as a way to fill a $133,000 budget deficit that was incurred when the board failed to pass a utility tax increase in April. Although the board had planned for the tax increase in its budget planning session in fall 2011, three trustees surprised their fellow board members by voting against the increase, …

La Grange has become known as a destination for great food in the west suburbs, but are restaurants overcrowding everyone else?
This is a problem that, actually, is not really a problem at all, right? Can we really have too many restaurants in downtown La Grange to choose from? The downtown area has become a destination for diners in the western suburbs due to a wealth of great food and great options. Still, some residents have told me they're still hungry for something more. Specifically, residents seem to want more retail options in the village's downtown area. I don't think any La Grange resident wants to see a restaurant close, but it does sound like some want more diversity. What do you think? Vote in our poll below and tell us in comments if there is a specific store or type of business you'd like to see more of. Tell our readers about businesses which have …
Linnea Jewelers in La Grange is planning to surprise one lucky mom this Mother's Day with some bling.
Mother's Day is going to shine a little brighter this year for one lucky mom in the La Grange area. Linnea Jewelers, 23 S. Ashland Ave. in La Grange, is giving away a 1.03 ct. Princess Cut diamond necklace for Mother's Day this year. "If a carat is a dream, then this is a dream come true," said Linnea owner Denise Oros. "We wanted to do something really special for moms this Mother's Day." Some lucky customer will get to pull the winner's name from a large glass bowl filled with folded paper to raffle off the necklace, worth about $5,800, this Saturday at Linnea. The raffle, Oros said, will be just in time to surprise one of her customers on their special day. A Princess Cut diamond is especially popular because of it color and clarity, …

The first of two proposed public hearings on the issue of electrical aggregation will be held tonight at Village Hall in La Grange Park at 6 p.m. Need some information? Read our article on what's at stake.
The first of two public hearings on whether the village should join with other municipalities to purchase electricity as a group on behalf of residents will be held tonight at Village Hall in La Grange Park, 447 N. Catherine Ave. Tonight's meeting will be held in the village's conference room at 6 p.m. and will offer a chance for residents to ask questions and get more information about plans to purchase power on their behalf. In March, 68 percent of voters supported a referendum in favor of electrical aggregation. Trustees have said at past meetings that they hope purchasing electricity as a group will save residents between 20-30 percent off their electrical bills. Background Information The issue was first discussed at a Village Board …
