Lyons Township athletic training staff sprang news of a tremendous sports-training scholarship honor on Emily Florek—who then had to dash off to work a softball game.
Emily Florek was thrilled by the news that Lyons Township athletic staff, along with her family, surprised her with after school on Tuesday: Florek had won the $2000 national Jack Cramer Scholarship, one of the most prestigious awards out there for a student planning to study sports medicine, reportedly by a landslide. But she couldn’t celebrate for long—after all, she had a softball team to look after as they traveled to Glenbard East. This is part of the dedication that earned the scholarship for Florek, a La Grange senior, after she has spent a large portion of her time at LTHS as a student trainer for Lions teams, including the football and wrestling squads. Originally joining the training staff on a lark, she will now major in sports …

Kate (Reicher) DeProsperis, a 1997 Lyons Township graduate, already is thinking about the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in the women's marathon after qualifying for the first time for the 2012 trials in Houston as the lone Illinois-based runner in the field.
After being the lone Illinois-based female representative at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials Jan. 14 in Houston, Kate (Reicher) DeProsperis was asked later that month to attend a promotional event for the 2012 Chicago Marathon in October. Registration was opened to the public Feb. 1, and the 45,0000 spots were filled in a record six days. “It didn’t surprise me,” said DeProsperis, a 1997 Lyons Township graduate and Downers Grove resident. “I think the big marathons and running is becoming so huge, let alone marathons. I think everyone and their mother wants to say they’ve run a marathon. “(Chicago) gets a big draw not just locally and nationally but internationally. Chicago is known as one of the fastest (marathons). Every person of any …

Lyons Township senior Colleen Connors nearly reaches the finals of the Class 4A Three-Point Showdown while the LT boys gymnastics team begins its season and the indoor track teams post strong times at the Mustang Relays.
Lyons Township senior Colleen Connors had a strong showing at the Class 4A girls basketball Country Financial Three-Point Showdown preliminaries March 1 at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena in Normal. It nearly was even more successful. Connors made 9 of 15 attempts to tie for 10th place among the 32 entries that had qualified with top-four finishes in four previous rounds prior to regional and sectional games. Four players advanced to the championship round March 2. If Connors had made 10, she would have been in a three-player shootout with six other players for the final advancing qualifying spot. “Nine of out 15 shots made is phenomenal—that’s more than 50 percent. And she knows how tough it was to advance to the next round,” LT…

University of Iowa freshman Brian Donatelli, a 2011 Lyons Township graduate, qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 50-meter freestyle Feb. 26 in Iowa City after competing at the Big Ten Conference Championships.
As Brian Donatelli completed his senior season swimming for Lyons Township last year and prepared to compete at the University of Iowa, he had some memorable parting words for LT coach Scott Walker. “I was pretty nervous going to Iowa. I always went to Coach Walker for help and I remember I went up to him before I left and said, ‘You know what? I’m going to try and go for an Olympic Trials time?’ ” Donatelli said. “He looked at me, smirked and said, ‘You’re going to have to work hard for that.’ ” On Feb. 26, it actually happened. Just after Donatelli competed for the Hawkeyes at the Big Ten Conference Championships in Iowa City, he equaled the U.S. Olympic Trials cut in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 23.49 seconds at the Hawkeye/Big…

The Lyons Township boys indoor track team takes fifth at the Proviso West Invite but only seven points from first place while the boys swimming team concludes its season at the state meet preliminaries.
Last season, the Lyons Township boys indoor track team won the varsity level of the prestigious Proviso West Invitational for the only time in the meet’s 46-year history. The Lions nearly pulled it off again Saturday. LT finished fifth in the 12-team field with 60 points but was just seven points behind champion Neuqua Valley, which prevailed by one point over defending Class 3A outdoor state champion Lake Park. York (64 points) and Wheaton North (63) were third and fourth. “(Our meet was) hit and miss, and to see that we’re only seven points out kind of reinforces the fact that there were some small things we should have taken care of going into this meet to be mentally focused,” LT coach Mike Danner said. “We had the ability to be up …

The Lyons Township boys basketball team lost to Oak Park-River Forest in the Class 4A LT Regional semifinals to finish with an 11-16 record after a 2-9 start.
Trailing by 18 points in the second quarter Tuesday, the Lyons Township boys basketball team responded the way it had all season. The Lions battled back. They closed to within one point in the third quarter and two points twice in the fourth quarter before having their season end with a 60-51 loss to West Suburban Conference Silver Division champion Oak Park-River Forest in the semifinals of the Class 4A LT Regional in La Grange. “I’m just really proud of the effort the kids made. The end result wasn’t what we wanted, but the effort was there and that’s what is most important,” LT coach Tom Sloan said. “It would have been really easy in the first half to just cave in and say, ‘It’s not our night,’ but they hung with it. We had guys making …
