District 204 Lambasted over Deal with Township Treasurer's Office

The district denied any impropriety in the arrangement it made in 1999 that excused it from paying administrative fees for tasks it handles in house.

Tensions erupted at the District 204 School Board meeting Monday night when a former District 101 School Board member attacked 204’s relationship with the beleaguered Lyons Township Treasurer’s Office.  District 204 forcefully defended itself against Martin Brown as he bashed the financial effect he said a fee arrangement between the TTO and the district had on other member school districts.  "This falls far short of the law and what reasonable people would expect of their public servants, especially for an intergovernmental agreement covering a very significant amount of money," Brown said. The district made a deal with former Lyons Township Treasurer Robert Healy in 1999 that allowed it to take a pass on certain administrative fees …

LT Students Dance too Dirty, Dad Says

The bumping and grinding at Lyons Township functions such as Homecoming is appalling, a parent told the District 204 board at Monday's meeting.

Everyone’s cutting a little too loose at Lyons Township High School, one father said Monday at the District 204 School Board meeting. Ken Mulcrone implored the district to keep a tighter watch on the moves students pull on the dance floor after what he witnessed when he and his wife chaperoned last fall’s Homecoming Dance. “My wife and I went into the gymnasium and our jaws dropped to the floor because of a dance called the grind,” he said. Though Mulcrone did not go into detail, grinding is typically known as a dance where people rub up against each other suggestively. “You just wouldn’t want to have a daughter in that situation,” he said. “It’s not right, it’s not fair, and it’s appalling.” Mulcrone has one son who is a senior at LT and …

Lyons Township District 204 Could Owe $2M+ in Unpaid Fees

The district brokered a deal with former Lyons Township Treasurer Robert Healy that relieved it of certain fees to the school treasurer’s office—until now, according to a Better Government Association report.

Embattled former Lyons Township Treasurer Robert Healy resigned last year amid allegations he misused more than $500,000 worth of sick, vacation and personal time. Now the Better Government Association (BGA) is saying that a decade-old deal he made with Lyons Township District 204 could end up costing the district more than $2 million in unpaid fees. The report, published Monday, said that Healy made an arrangement with District 204 that allowed it to take a pass on certain administrative fees charged to other Lyons Township districts. The district uses its own staff to perform most payroll, billing and bookkeeping tasks. But according to the BGA, state law requires the district to pay these fees even if it handles the jobs in-house. …

May I suggest that our local politicos start working on some specialized legislation to forestall having to pay this money - along the lines of that special legislation that the developer of Timber Trails got to forestall local monies being used to buy some of the real estate to save some trees. Otherwise, perhaps Dist. 204 should sue Mr. Healy if the deal was bogus.   more ›

Joe: This is what was told to us by the faculty and guidance counselors. It certainly seemed plausible then when we had intellectually competitive events with other schools and the only high school that consistently bested us was New Trier. It also had to do with ACT and SAT scores - and in those days those did establish we were beating places like both Hinsdale high schools. I don't think the …   more ›
