Retiring Cossitt Principal Gets Fond Farewell

Cossitt Principal Mary Tavegia received a warm sendoff on Thursday evening from parents. She retires in June after 33 years at Cossitt Elementary in La Grange.

On the 200 block of south Stone Avenue on Thursday evening a small crowd was gathered at the home of Courtney Menna to enjoy the warm evening air and say a fond farewell to a Cossitt Avenue School staple—Principal Mary Tavegia. About 150 parents of Cossitt students, both past and present, showed up at the farewell party to say thanks to Tavegia for her 33-year commitment to students at Cossitt School in La Grange. Tavegia will retire in June after 33 years at Cossitt, first as a teacher, and for the last 16 years as the school's principal. "We felt it was important to give people an opportunity to say thank you," said Sharon Volz, president of the Cossitt's Parent Teacher Club (PTC). La Grange Teen's Fight for Equality

Backed by the Attorney General's Office and a disability rights advocacy group, Fenwick High School swimmer alleges in federal lawsuit the IHSA excludes her from competition.

Peppered by questions from TV and radio reporters, 16-year-old Mary Kate Callahan, of La Grange, calmly explained her rigorous training routines and the struggle to simply compete alongside her peers in state competitions. "I train just as hard as everyone else," the Fenwick High School junior said. "You know we put in just as much effort as everyone else." Callahan, wheelchair-bound because of a paralysis of her lower limbs, is named as a plaintiff in a federal lawsuit against the Illinois High School Association, the nonprofit regulating the interscholastic competitions across the state. LT's Lion Newspaper and WTLT Radio Earn National Recognition

A staff member on Lyons Township High School's Lion Newspaper and the school's WLTL radio station each won national recognition recently.

Two of Lyons Township High School's media clubs received national recognition recently. A student staff member of the school's Lion Newspaper received a national award and the school's radio station, WLTL, was honored again at the Communication Awards. Mary Cate Most Takes 3rd Place for the Lion Newspaper LT junior Mary Kate Most earned third place in the Environment Category of the 2012 National Federation of Press Women High School Communications Contest. Her in-depth story, Drug Drive Prevents Abuse, Pollution, also recently won first place in the first round of the contest between students in Illinois. LT Transition Students Decorate Grandfather Clock for "Hour Town" Art Exhibit

Students in LT's transition program are the designers of the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce's grandfather clock this year. The clock will appear in downtown La Grange as part of the village's summer art exhibit.

Students in Lyons Township High School's transition program will have their work on display this summer as part of the La Grange Business Association's summer art exhibit, "Hour Town La Grange: Time Well Spent." This summer, grandfather clocks will dot the La Grange landscape for the exhibit. Previous year's exhibits have included cow statues and rocking chairs purchased by area businesses and painted by local artists. The West Suburban Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WSCCI) commissioned transition students again this year to decorate their grandfather clock. Students in the program turned the clock into a tree and have spent time painting on leaves and branches. Titled, Hour Tree: It's Time To Grow, the clock will be on display in …

LT Students Take Home Prizes at Tech Day Competition

Equipped with just rulers, safety glasses, tape measures and X-Acto knives, 14 Lyons Township High School students earned medals in a variety of technology-based events at the annual Technology Day. A total of 400 students from 20 different schools participated. Technology Day is sponsored by the Illinois Technology Student Association and was hosted by Illinois State University’s Technology Education Collegiate Association. The event provides an opportunity for students to learn about technology education, competing against students from all over the state of Illinois in hands-on, problem-solving, engineering-based activities and challenges. Technology Day is a one-day series of STEM-based, simultaneous, hands-on competitive events. Each …

Kelli Joy Peace Garden Dedicated at Highlands

District 106 held an indoor and outdoor ceremony to open a new memorial outside Highlands Middle School to their tragically slain young alumna.

Long live the walls we crashed through/all the kingdom lights shined just for me and you/I was screaming, long live all the magic we made/And bring on all the pretenders, one day we will be remembered... So sang the Highlands Middle School show choir on Wednesday, performing Taylor Swift’s “Long Live” as they dedicated a new “peace garden” in front of the school memorializing Kelli Joy O’Laughlin, a 2011 Highlands graduate who was killed in her Indian Head Park home in October. The garden consists of a granite bench, a Jane magnolia tree and a stone with a plaque bearing Kelli’s name. On Wednesday, the tree was decorated in ribbons bearing the names of the Highlands Middle School Class of 2011—so Kelli could be “surrounded by her …

LT Makes Rank for Best High Schools in the Nation, State

U.S. News & World Report releases the fourth edition of its ranking of high schools around the country. Take a look where Lyons Township High School placed compared to other nearby schools.

Sixteen area high schools are ranked in U.S. News & World Report’s evaluation of nearly 22,000 American public high schools. The rankings were released as part of the Best High School rankings, now in its fourth edition. The methodology to produce the rankings included test scores, state assessments and college-level coursework, such as Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, both of which include college-level courses. U.S. News & World explained its methodology here.  Schools were awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals based on state proficiency standards, how well they prepare students for college, and other factors. Travel: French Students Tour Paris

Students recount the shopping, the food and the sights from a recent trip to Paris over spring break.

It's one thing to study the culture and language of France from a textbook in a La Grange classroom, but it's something entirely different to experience it in Paris, a group of eighth grade and freshmen students from the La Grange area learned recently. For a trip led by Park Junior High French teacher Christine Boyd, students in eighth grade at Park and some former students of Boyd, now freshmen at Lyons Township High School, got an opportunity of a lifetime: a seven-day trip to Paris. New Private School in Hinsdale Receives Interest from Western Springs, La Grange Area Residents

Nurturing Wisdom Academy plans to admit no more than 36 students and will feature a longer school day and year.

A new middle school that emphasizes one-on-one instruction and independent study is likely headed to Hinsdale this summer. Nurturing Wisdom Academy plans to open in August at the currently empty Zion Lutheran School at 2nd and Vine streets and serve a maximum of 36 fifth- through eighth-graders with a customized education plan they may not be receiving in their current schools.
