Blotter: Conversation Worries Resident, Woman Hurt By Broken Window and More

Conversation Worrisome La Grange police were called at about 4:45 p.m. May 11 after someone reported hearing two men at Lincoln and Sawyer avenues talking about stabbing each other. One man was in a champagne-colored sport-utility vehicle and the other was wearing a red hat and black shirt and riding on a red bicycle. Police could not locate them. West Suburban Police Chiefs Prepared for NATO

West suburban police chiefs say they are prepared for, but do not expect, direct impact from the NATO Summit in Chicago this weekend.

The West Suburban Chiefs of Police Association sent out a press release today letting residents know they are prepared for, but do not expect, a local impact from this Weekend's NATO Summit in Chicago. Blotter: Man Gets DUI After Crash

The following items are from Patch's reporting of the La Grange and La Grange Park police blotters.

DUI Ticket After Crash A Brookfield man was ticketed for driving under the influence after La Grange Park police said his car was in a rear-end collision, injuring the other driver, on the 1100 block of north La Grange Road at about 9:39 p.m. on May 5. Wiley R. Stewart, 58, of 9200 block of Broadway Avenue, also was ticketed for failure to reduce his speed to avoid an accident. The other driver, a woman whose age and hometown were not released, complained of neck and back pain from the collision and was taken by ambulance to Loyola Hospital in Maywood. She told police that the other driver seemed disoriented and had glassy eyes. Stewart told police he had a few beers with his dinner and police said he had a strong odor of an alcoholic …

La Grange Police Chief Receives Award

La Grange Police Chief Michael Holub was the recipient of an award from the Illinois Bar Association on Monday evening at the village's board of trustees meeting.

Michael Holub, chief of police in La Grange, received a round of applause on Monday evening at La Grange's Village Hall as the recipient of an Illinois Bar Association award for distinguished service. The award was announced by the West Suburban Chiefs of Police Association on May 2 and was presented to Holub by Dave Anderson, associate executive director of the Illinois Bar Association and by Judge Russ Hartigan, who recommended Holub for the award. “I can't think of anyone more deserving of this award than Mike Holub,” Judge Hartigan said. The award is given each year to a sworn officer who promotes justice and whose public service brings honor to the entire criminal justice system, according to the Illinois Bar Association. Upon …

La Grange Park Firefighters Extinguish Double Garage Fires

The La Grange Park Fire Department extinguished a two-garage fire on the 300 block of Catherine Avenue on Monday.

Firefighters in La Grange Park were called to the 300 block of Catherine Avenue and the 300 block of Ashland Avenue in La Grange Park on Monday morning around 6 a.m. for a report of two unattached garages on fire. A passerby reported the fires to the department on a mobile phone and called the department after spotting them. When firefighters arrived at the home on Ashland Avenue, residents were attempting to get their property out of the garage. Residents at the home on Catherine Avenue were unaware of the fire prior to firefighters arriving. Fighting the fire was momentarily delayed over concern that live wires on an overhead electrical line may have been damaged. Blotter: Two Downtown La Grange Businesses Suspicious of Checks

The following items are from Patch's reporting on the La Grange police blotter.

Two downtown La Grange businesses reported to police on May 10 that a woman came in and wanted to purchase merchandise with a “starter” check that did not have preprinted personal information on it about the check writer. One business manager refused the check for $600. An owner of a second business took a check for $122.51, but that bank said there was no money in the checking account and to try again the next day to cash it. No information was available May 14 from La Grange police on whether the two incidents were connected and whether fraud was involved.   The manager of the first business told police a female came in at about 5 p.m. on May 8, took clothes off a rack without looking at them, brought them to the counter and tried to pay…

Accused O'Laughlin Killer Requests to Represent Himself, Found Fit for Trial

John L. Wilson has been indicted on 31 felony charges and faces life in prison for the first-degree murder of 14-year-old Lyons Township freshman Kelli O'Laughlin.

The man charged with the murder of an Indian Head Park teen is requesting to represent himself at trial. The attorney who had been representing him, Naperville-based John Paul Carroll is facing *disciplinary action and a possible 90-day suspension for two unrelated cases. John L. Wilson is charged with murdering 14-year-old Kelli O'Laughlin, a freshman at Lyons Township High School, after she came home from school and walked in on him burglarizing her house last October. Carroll had agreed to continue to represent Wilson through any disciplinary proceedings, because the potential disciplinary action did not disqualify him from doing so. In La Grange and La Grange Park Heroin Arrests Aren't Increasing

In two articles last week, The Doings took a look at heroin in the western suburbs.

Two articles published in The Doings last week took a look at the prevalence of heroin abuse in the Western Suburbs. Spurred by a recent blotter item, The Doings' Jane Michaels reported that police chiefs in La Grange and La Grange Park both said they don't get many arrests for heroin in our two villages. La Grange Park police chief Dan McCollum suggested that if the towns were closer to the Eisenhower Expressway, both communities might see more of it. However, La Grange Police Chief Michael Holub said he believed 45 percent of crimes like theft and burglary are drug related. Missing Woman 'Endangered,' May Be With Boyfriend Who Was Told to Stay Away

Second incident involves La Grange resident and alleged kidnapping.

An 18-year-old Willow Springs girl is described as missing and endangered by police after she was last seen May 5 and is believed to be with a boyfriend, a 16-year La Grange boy, whom she has an order of protection against. La Grange police went late May 7 to the boy’s home on the 300 block of East Avenue where they said relatives told officers they have not seen him since the weekend. The girl’s mother said she had not spoken to her since Saturday and believes she is with the boyfriend. The girl is 4-foot-8, weighs 110 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes. She last was seen wearing a sleeveless white and green blouse and white pants. The boy is 5-foot-6 and wearing 123 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. La Grange police said the …

LT Finds 2 Students With Drugs, Paraphernalia

LT Officials Hold 2 on Drug-Related Charges La Grange police were called twice on the morning May 8 to Lyons Township High School North Campus, 100 S. Brainard Ave., on drug-related incidents involving students. In the first incident, at about 7:59 a.m., an 18-year-old La Grange boy found with marijuana was charged with possession of cannabis, less than 30 grams, and faces a June 25 court date.   Thirty minutes later, school officials had in custody a student for possession of drug paraphernalia—foil with a marijuana residue.
