Cossitt Principal Mary Tavegia received a warm sendoff on Thursday evening from parents. She retires in June after 33 years at Cossitt Elementary in La Grange.
On the 200 block of south Stone Avenue on Thursday evening a small crowd was gathered at the home of Courtney Menna to enjoy the warm evening air and say a fond farewell to a Cossitt Avenue School staple—Principal Mary Tavegia. About 150 parents of Cossitt students, both past and present, showed up at the farewell party to say thanks to Tavegia for her 33-year commitment to students at Cossitt School in La Grange. Tavegia will retire in June after 33 years at Cossitt, first as a teacher, and for the last 16 years as the school's principal. "We felt it was important to give people an opportunity to say thank you," said Sharon Volz, president of the Cossitt's Parent Teacher Club (PTC). "She's really built a community at the school between …
Ah! But my esteemed Kane Countians get to take the week off!
My fine Kane County compatriots! You’ve done well. Political perfection may be a pipe dream, but I have to say that things are looking a little better out here because of your recent voting proclivities. The sheriff who thought he was king is long gone and Pat Perez has done a phenomenal job in his place. In fact, he’s done so well that I’ve been encouraging him to consider a third term. You might want to do the same thing. Once stripped of her County Board cronies, Chairman Karen McConnaughay fled for Springfield faster than a Rush Limbaugh advertiser jumped ship. She’ll do far less damage down there and fit in perfectly with that group of ineffectual state senators. You saw right through Cathy Hurlbutt’s court clerk makeover attempt, you…

Backed by the Attorney General's Office and a disability rights advocacy group, Fenwick High School swimmer alleges in federal lawsuit the IHSA excludes her from competition.
Peppered by questions from TV and radio reporters, 16-year-old Mary Kate Callahan, of La Grange, calmly explained her rigorous training routines and the struggle to simply compete alongside her peers in state competitions. "I train just as hard as everyone else," the Fenwick High School junior said. "You know we put in just as much effort as everyone else." Callahan, wheelchair-bound because of a paralysis of her lower limbs, is named as a plaintiff in a federal lawsuit against the Illinois High School Association, the nonprofit regulating the interscholastic competitions across the state. The lawsuit, filed jointly by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's Office and Equip for Equality, a Chicago-based advocacy group, alleges the IHSA …

Students in LT's transition program are the designers of the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce's grandfather clock this year. The clock will appear in downtown La Grange as part of the village's summer art exhibit.
Students in Lyons Township High School's transition program will have their work on display this summer as part of the La Grange Business Association's summer art exhibit, "Hour Town La Grange: Time Well Spent." This summer, grandfather clocks will dot the La Grange landscape for the exhibit. Previous year's exhibits have included cow statues and rocking chairs purchased by area businesses and painted by local artists. The West Suburban Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WSCCI) commissioned transition students again this year to decorate their grandfather clock. Students in the program turned the clock into a tree and have spent time painting on leaves and branches. Titled, Hour Tree: It's Time To Grow, the clock will be on display in …

The West Suburban Chiefs of Police Association sent out a press release today letting residents know they are prepared for, but do not expect, a local impact from this Weekend's NATO Summit in Chicago. For information from Patch on how the NATO Summit this weekend will hamper your commute by rail and highway to the city, click here. According to Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel, police in area suburbs have been regularly meeting with federal agencies and the Chicago Police Department to develop an area-wide strategy for the NATO Summit in Chicago May 20-21. “We want to be proactive and take a look at all the areas of the communities served by the West Suburban Chiefs of Police Association in order to determine what impacts there may be…
A controversial magazine cover makes breastfeeding and attachment parenting look almost glamorous—but is it? No. It's not.
Time Magazine’s cover of a woman breastfeeding her son was intended to bring awareness to attachment parenting. Instead it made the long-suffering magazine look desperate for attention, and some poor kid a lifelong subject of playground bullying. I mean, what is the cutoff for breastfeeding, little league? Most of my friends who breastfed didn’t have the cover subject’s fresh “après yoga” appearance. If the article was actually about parenting, why didn’t Time choose someone who looked more like an exhausted mom than a model? Let’s face it, being with a kid 24 hours a day is not relaxing. Attachment parenting encourages practices like co-sleeping (baby sleeps with the parents) and baby-wearing (do I have to explain it?). According to some …
