The bakery has been a catering business since 2007, but the French-trained chef has always dreamed of opening her own storefront.
After years of existing as a catering business, Isn't That Sweet bakery has a store front now on La Grange Road. Isn't That Sweet opened May 16 at 21A S. La Grange Rd. and offers cupcakes, tarts, macaroons and more treats. Palos Heights resident Nicole Betourney’s dessert company was formerly exclusive to catering, but made the move to selling individual cupcakes and other treats when it opened in Now Serving last year. Write a review of Isn't That Sweet Bakery. Betourney considered that a test run for her business, and now she's finally got the brick-and-mortar space she's been seeking. "I've been looking at La Grange for a while," she said. "It's such a cute, little downtown area." She's run Isn’t That Sweet since 2007 out of a …
Cheryl Vargas started La Grange Food Not Lawns Gardening Group to bring together like-minded people—and hopes to feed herself through the winter with only food she grew herself.
Where once there was grass, beds of bare earth speckle Cheryl Vargas’ yard. But soon an abundant harvest of blueberries, cucumbers and kale will spring from the soil. Enough, Vargas hopes, to feed her and her husband through the winter. The La Grange resident is on a mission to live a truly sustainable life by growing all the fruits and vegetables she eats—and she wants other locals to join her in the journey. In April, Vargas started La Grange Foods Not Lawns Gardening Group, as well as the Facebook page For Healthy Foods. The group is a way for people interested in the slow food movement, disciples of which grow their own food, to share knowledge, swap seeds and trade labor in each other’s gardens. “I guess I felt alone in my pursuit of …
This week we're featuring one home from the Western Springs Historical Society's House Walk. Today we feature the Schuster home, which has a beautiful fireplace and light everywhere, including the basement.
The Western Springs Historical Society's House Walk was Sunday, May 19, and this week we'll be featuring one of the homes each day. The event put the spotlight on local homes that are "historic or soon-to-be historic." Local businesses helped create the tablescapes and flowers throughout the homes, which were showcased by many volunteers. Today we feature the Schuster house at 5104 Ellington Ave., my overall favorite along the tour because of its open and light-filled floor plan and its beautiful four-season porch. The Schusters have lived in Western Springs for a while but wanted to downsize after their son, Danny, left for college. Although this is a downsize, the open spaces, large windows and abundant storage make it a nice living …

From being the first Down syndrome student mainstreamed in her school district to starting her own advocacy organization, Bridget Brown's journeys are far and wide. Sponsored by Grape-Nuts.
Living like a movie star for a week, Bridget Brown of Darien had a small part in a movie with Miley Cyrus. Brown also has her own consulting business, works as a dental assistant’s assistant and has many more jobs in life few of us would ever conquer. Having Down syndrome, the 27-year-old woman is considered to be disabled, but you would never know by the full life she leads. Brown was the first person with a disability included in her school district and is a strong advocate of inclusion. Among her dislikes is hearing someone be insulted. "Don’t call people retarded," Brown says. "I got called that, I was angry and wanted to cry.” Another fight Brown goes up against is mothers who want to abort their babies when they find out the baby…

Large hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes are all possible.
Get ready for some storms. The storm system that dropped large hail and tornadoes on parts of Iowa, Kansas and Oklahoma is now headed toward Illinois. The National Weather Service has placed most of Illinois in the "slight risk" category for severe weather on Monday and Tuesday. The main threats on both days will be damaging winds and large hail. The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center noted in its technical discussions that isolated tornadoes are also possible on Monday and Tuesday. "The most violent storms will ignite during the afternoon and evening hours as daytime heating causes instability," Accuweather.com Meteorologist Meghan Evans wrote in her forecast. "Plenty of humid air will be in place to fuel the severe storms…
