VMC McCook works with community partners to ensure fun, safe Halloween

Local schools and police collaborate to establish safety's priority

To help ensure this year’s trick-or-treaters are safe when they take to the streets for candy, Vulcan Materials Company has partnered with the Hodgkins Police and Hodgkins Elementary School for its “Be Safe, Be Seen” Halloween safety campaign.

“Kids look forward to Halloween every year, and we want to make sure they can have a good time while staying safe,” said Kevin Cox, plant manager at Vulcan’s McCook Quarry. “Thanks to our community partners at the schools and police departments, parents and neighbors can take simple but effective steps to make sure our kids are visible when they head out to trick-or-treat.”

Vulcan representatives will also be on hand Saturday Oct. 27 to promote safety at the La Grange Halloween Walk and Fall Festival.

The National Safety Council also advises the following safety precautions to keep trick-or-treaters safe on Halloween night:

  • If children are allowed out after dark, outfits should be made with light-colored materials. Strips of retro-reflective tape should be used to make children visible.
  • Masks can obstruct a child's vision. Use facial make-up instead.
  • If masks are worn, they should have nose and mouth openings and large eye holes.
  • Walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic if there are no sidewalks.
  • Walk, do not run, from house to house. Do not cross yards and lawns where unseen objects or the uneven terrain can present tripping hazards.
  • Walk on sidewalks, not in the street.
