A True Gem: The La Grange Area Historical Society

The wealth of knowledge that exists at the historical society impresses me more and more each time I visit.

This year, I finally made it over to the , 444 S. LaGrange Road, to see what they were all about. I cannot begin to express how impressed I am with all the knowledge that exists in that building and in the minds of the society volunteers.

After talking to Mary Ann Sward, a society volunteer for more than 25 years, I thought it would be fun to share some of La Grange’s history and stories in upcoming columns. The next seven or eight "About Town" columns will feature people, places, and things from La Grange’s past.

Since 1972, the Historical Society has been collecting La Grange documents, photographs, artifacts, and memorabilia. There is no paid staff and is strictly run by dedicated volunteers. In the past, I wrote a column about to the Historical Society and continue to encourage all to donate.

While researching my upcoming columns, I commented that I still have all my Lyons Township High School IDs. I was quickly asked to donate them. I will be parting with them soon. My point is: what you think is trash might be an important part of this area's history, so before you throw it out check with them to see if it’s something they would like.

You can also become a member of the society or volunteer. The forms for which can be found by clicking here. The Historical Society is open every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. It is also open on the last Sunday of each month from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Outside of those hours, you can make appointment to visit by calling 708-482-4248.
