Mosquito Spraying - Is it really worth the risk?

In La Grange, you are hearing throughout the summer about mosquito spraying and the big fear of contracting the West Nile Virus.  We poison our air with this spray to repel mosquitoes but mosquitoes are not the problem.  First, less than 1% of anyone who has been infected by the West Nile Virus will become severely ill.  And most people who do become sick recover fully.  This comes straight from the MayoClinic website.  My question is, why do we become controlled by fear and spray our towns with sprays that actually create damaging effects to our health and DNA for the less than 1% chance and this is even less when you look at the percentage of contracting West Nile.

In the state of Illinois, information coming from the CDC (Center of Disease Control) website, states there has not been one case in 2013 of someone contracting the West Nile Virus.  Not one HUMAN contracting the West Nile Virus.  From 1999 - 2012, there were 1,976 individuals who contracted the West Nile Virus.  Out of those 1,976 individuals, based upon the MayoClinic statistics, 19.76 of those people may experience severe illness from this.

So does it make sense to spray our towns with a poison that causes health and DNA damage?  One of the main ingredients in these sprays that kill off/ward off mosquitoes is Malathion.  Malathion, even though we use this ingredient, is TOXIC via skin contact, ingestion and inhalation exposure.  Let me ask you a question, if we spray this product into the air which is TOXIC to human based on skin, ingestion and inhalation, do you think we will breathe this product at all?  So, we create toxicities in our lungs, in our digestive system and our skin to prevent the threat of West Nile Virus which is maybe on average since 1999, 140 cases a year?  Lets see what that is equilivalent to the state of Illinois's population.  State of Illinois, information found from (www.census.gov) states that we have 12,875,255 people living in Illinois from 2012.  So, if we have an average of 140 cases per year of West Nile Virus and only 1.4 of those cases will be serious, that means we spray our towns with a toxic chemical, decreases our health, has the potential to disrupt our DNA or even damage it from the free radicals that are caused from these toxins even worth it?  So, the average number of cases to the number of people in Illinois means you have a 1.0875 x 10 to the negative fifth power which means, there is basically such a small chance it is under 0.00001% chance of contracting the West Nile in Illinois based on the stats since 1999.

What are your thoughts?  Does it make sense to spray our town, La Grange and La Grange Park with this toxic chemical that is toxic to our skin, lungs and digestive system and will cause free radicals that can and will damage our cells and more importantly, our DNA...

If you are looking for natural ways to repel mosquitoes, there are many.  I have attached an article about natural repellents that work.  I use one myself that is made of organic vanilla extract, lavender and eucalyptus oil mixed with water that works like magic.  Plus, it leaves a nice scent.
