LTHS Scholastic Bowlers strike success
The Lyons Township High School Scholastic Bowl Team won the Regional tournament yesterday, with wins against Niles North and Evanston and an upset over the favored Chicago Latin School. LT advances to the Sectional tournament this weekend. The team finished their season in second place in conference.
Scholastic Bowl is a fast-paced game similar to Jeopardy played by teams. Each team consists of five players, and the players try to "buzz in" more quickly than the other team when a toss-up question is read. If the player answers correctly, his or her team gets ten points and an opportunity to answer a three-part bonus question worth up to thirty points. The team then has 10 seconds per question to talk amongst themselves about the answers to each part of the question. If a player answers incorrectly, the other teams get an opportunity to answer the toss-up. A match consists of about 24 toss-up and bonus questions and the team with the most points at the end of the match wins. Questions can fall in many different categories - including Social Studies, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Science, Fine Arts and Miscellaneous.
