LT to host Model UN conference

LT is anxious to host the fourth annual Saint Ignatius - Lyons Township Model United Nations Conference (SILTMUN) on December 7, the anniversary of Pearl Harbor. In total, nearly 500 students from 21 area high schools will participate in the conference scheduled from 8am-5pm at North Campus, 100 S. Brainard Ave., LaGrange.

Students will serve on 13 committees and discuss and debate a variety of topics. LT will provide live feed simulations to generate realistic and intense committee sessions. Topics of debate include drug trafficking, international trade, climate change, illegal migrants, and in honor of the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, a debate on how to deal with the issues surrounding global policy and the pacific arena as well as the response to the attack on Pearl Harbor.

LT is co-sponsoring the SILTMUN conference with St. Ignatius High School. Participating schools include Stevenson, Leyden, Francis W Parker, Maine South, Marion Catholic, Nazareth Academy, Saint Patrick, Whitney Young, William Fremd, York and of course LTHS and St. Ignatius.

The opening ceremonies begin at 8am in the Reber Center, with committee sessions running for the remainder of the day. More than 30 LT delegates and as many LT staff members will be participating in Saturday’s conference.

The Model United Nations experience brings to life the problems that face the real world and allows participants to represent their assigned country's position and work toward resolving issues of global importance.

Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the U.N. General Assembly. A Model U.N. delegate is a student who assumes the role of an ambassador to the United Nations. While awards are given out for the best speakers of each committee, there are no points as in debate.

LT’s Model U.N. Club meets every Wednesday after school in Room C130 at South Campus, 4900 S. Willow Springs Rd., Western Springs. For additional information, contact advisor John Cronfel at jcronfel@lths.net
