LT students to participate in Supreme Court mock trial

On Friday, 10 Lyons Township High School Constitutional Law students will argue a First Amendment case concerning prayer at a public meeting as part of a Supreme Court Mock Trial called You(th) Decide at Chicago-Kent College of Law.  The Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago is offering the Civic Youth Leadership Project for high school students in Chicago and the metropolitan area in partnership with the Chicago-Kent College of Law and the Loyola University Chicago School of Law.  Law students and professors will help the high school students formulate arguments on a constitutional issue currently in front of the US Supreme Court.  (Greece v. Galloway).

Students are in the process of reading arguments about the case and preparing an initial response to the constitutional issues presented in the case. Students will convene for a day of deliberation with peers, law students, and law professors. You(th) Decide will address Town of Greece v. Galloway, which was argued November 6, 2013, before the Supreme Court of the United States, but the court has not released its decision yet.

LT Constitutional Law teacher Mica Vahl says, “Students in Constitutional Law study the Supreme Court through the analysis of landmark and current Supreme Court decisions/issues.  This mock trial provides students a chance to formulate arguments using databases that provide case precedents for a case that is currently on the Supreme Court docket. What better way for students to learn about the procedures of the Supreme Court than to participate in a mock trial that allows them to develop arguments and practice the oratory skills necessary for any attorney?”
