LT participates in inaugural Black Student Leadership Conference
Approximately 35 African-American Lyons Township High School students recently attended the inaugural Black Student Leadership Conference designed to encourage and educate African-American high school students about the college options available to them.
In total, approximately 445 students from 23 area high schools attended the event. Students were divided into four groups and attended sessions on college exploration, selecting a major, paying for college and expectations for college. There was also a keynote speaker and a college fair featuring representatives from 45 colleges. The speakers and admissions representative were from the African-American community so students could more readily identify with their experiences and culture.
This event, held February 11 at the College of DuPage, evolved from a collaborative meeting of college counselors at Fenton, Glenbard West, Lyons Township, Oak Park-River Forest, Wheaton North and York high schools in an effort to better serve black students and promote earlier planning for college. The College of DuPage Office of Admissions and Outreach joined the partnership, allowing the high schools to broaden their original scope to many more students in the DuPage area.
