LTHS to host College Week

Lyons Township High School kicks off College Week on Tuesday, April 2.

Following Spring Break, Lyons Township High School kicks off College Week on Tuesday, April 2, to raise awareness about the many college opportunities that await LT students and to end the senior year with a little “spirit” as they move on to new challenges. It also promotes conversation and interest in the college process for juniors and some great memories and stories from faculty and staff as they reminisce about their experiences.

Sticker Day starts off the week on Tuesday, and gives faculty, staff and administrators an opportunity to proudly sport the name of their alma mater. Administrators, faculty, and staff will have a chance to show students where they went to college and to offer personal insights. The College/Career Center will supply every employee with a sticker that reads: I graduated from __________; ask me. Employees can tout the name of the college(s) where they received their undergraduate, graduate or doctoral degree(s). Students should ask faculty, staff and administrators about their experiences.

Seniors will also have a chance to wear stickers. Their choices are: I will be attending _______________; ask me or I’ve been accepted to _____________; ask me.  Students should be proud of the decisions they made for their future and want to talk to juniors about the process.

Stickers will be given out at the North Campus clock tower entrance and Park Avenue entrances before school or at the College Center during the day.

Wednesday, April 3 is the highlight of the week with College Night at North Campus, which offers students an opportunity to meet representatives from more than 230 schools that will be prepared to answer questions about admission requirements, strength of a program or major, housing, financial costs and aid, as well as fraternities, sororities, and athletics. Each college/university will be assigned a table alphabetically in the fieldhouse, except for the Illinois State schools which will be located in the rear of the fieldhouse for easy access. Counselors will be available throughout the evening to help direct students to colleges that offer specific majors. National Honor Society volunteers will be on hand to assist with locating colleges and other hospitality needs.

The parking lot at North Campus will be reserved for college representatives only.  Parking will be available on the local streets and at South Campus with a shuttle bus running between South and North Campus continuously from 6:15p.m. – 8:45pm.

“Show your team Spirit,” Thursday, April 4, is the day for all to don their favorite college gear. Sweatshirts, tee-shirts, sweats and more will be worn by students, faculty and staff to show their support for their favorite university or college team.

The College Center will also sponsor an “Essay Writing Workshop” for juniors during the 4/5 and 7/8 lunch periods on Thursday. Knox College will walk students through the process and students can sign up for the workshop on Naviance under “College Visits”.

The week will conclude Friday, April 5, with College/ Scholarship Pride Day. Any student who brings a copy of his/her college acceptance and/or scholarship offers to the College Center will receive a sweet treat!
