Beating Proviso West, Lyons Football One Win from Playoffs

But it won't be easy as LT must face West Suburban Gold champion Leyden in a do-or-die game at home next Friday to get into the postseason.

A two-game win streak, including a 20-7 win over Proviso West on Friday has placed the once-suffering Lyons Township High School football team (4-4) within striking distance of a playoff berth with one game remaining.

The Lions will have to beat the surging Leyden Eagles (7-1) at home this Friday to slip into the playoffs. Leyden has secured the West Suburban Gold championship after beating Proviso East 18-7, so will have less at stake, but has posted four shutout wins this year and outscored opponents 196 to 59.

LT quarterback Zachary Mahoney was 17-of-26 for 235 yards and one touchdown, a 34-yard strike to Matthew Harris; Jake Elliott added two field goals and Leonard Ross finished the game with an 11-yard TD plunge in the fourth quarter, The Doings Western Springs reported.

The Panthers largely avoided punting or kicking field goals, but were 1-of-5 on fourth downs and had two dropped passes in the end zone, all in the first half, the paper reported; their one touchdown came on a QB sneak.
