Student Expulsion, Employee Salaries Are Topics of Closed Sessions Held By LTHS Board

The Lyons Township High School Dist. 204 Board of Education began and ended its regular meeting Monday night in private discussion.

Monday night's regular meeting of the Lyons Township High School board of education began with a discussion concerning a proposal to expel one student, and ended with a discussion regarding employee salaries for the coming school year.

Both discussions were held in sessions closed to the public.

A unanimous vote approving the expulsion took place later during the board's open session, as required by Illinois law, although neither the identity of the student nor details of events precipitating the action were divulged.

The expelled student may apply for readmission after one year, provided certain requirements are satisfied, Board President Mark Pera said.

Details of the salaries approved by the board are expected to be made public later today.

Among other actions taken Monday night, the board unanimously:

  • Passed a resolution congratulating the boys baseball team and its coaches for winning the Class 4A state championship.
  • Expanded the Teacher Tablet PC program by approving the purchase of 15 additional devices at a cost of approximately $24,750. As a result, the number of teachers using the tablets in classroom activities is projected to increase from 65 to 71 percent—close to the program's "natural saturation point."
  • Approved a negotiated agreement between itself and the Instructional Aides and Paraprofessional Association (IAPA).
  • Approved a "first reading" of textbook change requests for the coming school year. Textbooks for two courses—Alternative English and BECCI English—are still subject to public review and inspection prior to the board's August regular meeting.
  • Authorized the expenditure of $1,693 to have the school's two liaisons to Hispanic and African American students attend a Minority Achievement Summer Workshop, where they will receive intervention training.

Dr. Timothy Kilrea, the district's superintendent, in his report presented a final update of the school's goals  for the 2010-11 academic year. You can watch his presentation in the video above.
