More Students Are Participating in Co-Curriculars at LT

Nearly 80 percent of students at Lyons Township High School are participating in co-curricular activities, board reports.

Even with balancing busy social lives, class time and homework, students at are finding time to participate in a wide range of co-curricular activities.

According to a report to the District 204 Board of Education, 78.5 percent of the student body—a total of 3,015 students—took part in a co-curricular activity in the 2010-2011 school year.

A slight majority of students participated in more than one of the school's programs, and 20 students participated in eight or more groups, the board reported.

In addition to students being able to put their activities on college applications, the report showed that students who participated had a higher grade point average (GPA) overall as well. The average GPA for a student who participates in co-curricular was 3.0, while the average GPA for students who did not partcipate was 2.3.

The report also showed an increase in minority student participation as well. Hispanic student involvement increased from 55 percent to nearly 69 percent between the 2009-2010 school year and the 2010-2011 school year.
