It’s officially summer at LTHS

Lyons Township High School Transition Program students were cutting grass and planting vegetable seedlings in the LT Transition Garden, officially signaling the start of summer. The garden, located just east of the Transition House at 1205 W. Cossitt Ave., LaGrange, is a district-owned house, where students learn valuable skills for the everyday demands of independent adult living. The Transition House is an authentic setting where students focus on practical life and independent living skills.

Students started more than 1,000 vegetable, herb and wildflower seedlings indoors, using growing stations they constructed. The extra seedlings are sold at the La Grange Farmers Market, located at the 6th Avenue parking garage, where the students share space with the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners and LaGrange Adventist Hospital. Student farmers sell seedlings, produce and crafts every Thursday morning.

During the summer, students water, weed and care for a variety of vegetables and flowers. This summer they will harvest hundreds of pounds of produce, which will be donated to local food pantries and sold at the La Grange Farmers Market. Students have also partnered with several local stores and restaurants, including The Fruit Store, Vie, Nicksons Eatery, Palmer Place, Now Serving and their most recent partner, Davonti’s in Western Springs. These restaurants pride themselves on serving locally grown produce.

The Transition House was built last fall and includes outdoor classroom space, ADA accessible pathways, wrought iron fencing, and six raised vegetable beds.
