Couples Night Out

Couples Night Out from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24 at the Dixon Education Center at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital, 5101 S. Willow Springs Road in La Grange. The free event is sponsored by the hospital and includes a cardiologist panel discussion from 8 to 8:30 p.m. featuring Dr. Paul Ryan, a cardiologist with Suburban Cardiologists, and Dr. Edgar Carell, a cardiologist with Adventist Heart and Vascular Institute.
Chief Mike Kelly of the Hinsdale Fire Department will discuss emergency procedures.

Ryan will discuss risk factors in real patients. Carell will review the symptoms and risks of peripheral artery disease (PAD). Symptoms include painful or heavy legs or wounds that won’t heal. High cholesterol, high blood pressure, a history of smoking, varicose veins or diabetes are high-risk factors for PAD.

“Patients who have leg pain should always be evaluated for heart disease and peripheral artery disease or PAD, also know as atherosclerosis, poor circulation or hardening of the arteries,” Carell said. “About 10 million people in the United States are affected by peripheral artery disease but only one in four is diagnosed and receives treatment. Those numbers are discouraging. As an interventional cardiologist, I encourage anyone experiencing leg pain to seek evaluation to rule out any relationship to heart disease and peripheral artery disease.”
