Nazareth Academy Students Work To Improve Native Habitat

An acknowledgement by Save The Prairie Society for all the help they received from Nazareth Academy students and teachers in helping to steward Cook County Forest Preserve's Wolf Rd. Prairie

Working along side Save The Prairie Society volunteers, students from Nazareth Academy donated six service days this spring to help restore Wolf Road Prairie. By working to eliminate the invasive, non-native buckthorn trees, they made it possible for many of our native plants to successfully germinate. It was a pleasure to work with the Nazareth teens whose high spirits and good humor created an atmosphere of fun and friendship.

Prairies are an endangered habitat. Their soils, plants, insects, birds, and wildlife have evolved in concert to create a bio-diverse community whose resilience has enabled it to endure extremes of temperature, floods, and drought for 12,000 years. Only man's encroachment over the last 200 years has led to its marked decline.

Our student volunteers have done much to ensure that this unique and prolific ecosystem will continue to endure not only for the sake of wildlife, but for all of us who enjoy its beauty as we continue to learn about its interconnectedness and myriad adaptations. Our thanks to the stuent volunteers and their teachers for all their help.
