Village Board Rules Against Business Signs on Old Borders Building

The La Grange Village Board denied a request for second-floor signage for businesses occupying the building on La Grange Road.

Businesses occupying the old Border Books building were denied a request to get second-floor signage, and they'll also need to remove the temporary banners advertising their existence.

The La Grange Village Board voted unanimously to approve an ordinance denying a request for a variance to the village code regarding signs. Language in the ordinance also stipulated that temporary banners that have been up since the businesses opened would need to be taken down.

Village staff will review the issue of second-floor signage in the coming months. The businesses most affected are Massage Envy and ATI Physical Therapy, which are both open on the second floor of the building, located at 1 N. La Grange Road.

Trustee Jeff Nowak asked board members to consider allowing the temporary banners to remain for a longer time, because the village's plan commission might not have a chance to revisit the matter for tree months.

"I'm concerned with leaving businesses with absolutely no signage," he said. "I hope there could be some signage allowance so people know that businesses exist."

But the other trustees didn't support that, with some saying the second-floor businesses could use window paintings to advertise.

"It's their responsibility to look at what our zoning laws are before signing a lease," trustee David McCarty said. "We're not obligated to offer them relief."
