Segway Use Approved for Some in La Grange
In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, people who prove they qualify for the ADA exemption can use a Segway in parks and public buildings, but only at 4 mph or slower.
Segways and other personal modes of transportation are now allowed in La Grange parks and village buildings, when used by people with disabilities, according to a resolution passed by the Park District of La Grange Board of Commissioners on Feb. 14
The resolution was approved to comply with new regulations under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
“It appears we will have to come back and tweak this later because unfortunately the Justice Department is still coming up with details on this new guideline,” said Mary Ellen Penicook, board president.

In order to ride a Segway in La Grange parks, Penicook said people will have to prove they are entitled to the ADA exemption. Individuals who meet the ADA criteria will be limited to speeds of no more than 4 mph.
“That could change in the future. We talked about it a lot (during the meeting) and that was what we settled on for now,” she said.

Despite the resolution, Penicook said residents should not expect to see Segway tours of the village. Segways are not currently allowed to operate on La Grange streets and sidewalks, Penicook said. However, they are .
