Same Sex Couples Can Marry Now in Cook County

Gay couples wanting to marry won't have to wait until state law goes into effect in June.

Gay couples in Cook County can move up their wedding dates, a federal judge in Chicago ruled Friday.

Same-sex couples in Cook County do not have to wait to wed until state law goes into effect on June 1, under the ruling by U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman.

"There is no reason to delay further when no opposition has been presented to this Court and committed gay and lesbian couples have already suffered from the denial of their fundamental right to marry,” Coleman stated, Chicago Tribune reports.

Cook County Clerk David Orr followed up the ruling by proclaiming he will begin issuing same-sex marriage licenses "immediately."
