La Grange Park Post Office Signs Lease, Good News for Village's Fight to Save Branch

The La Grange Park branch of the United States Post Office has signed a lease for their facility on 31 Street. Village officials consider it a good sign in fight to save branch threatened with closure last year.

The announced yesterday that it has received news that the La Grange Park branch of the United States Post Office has signed a new lease for its facility location on 31st Street, indicating it will be staying in the community for the foreseeable future.

"I could not be more thrilled regarding the recent development of the lease renewal, resulting in our Post Office Branch staying for an extended period of years," said Jim Discipio, village president, in the announcement. "Our residents spoke out and the Village wanted to be sure that these voices were heard. Residents wanted an accessible and convenient facility in their own community, and that will continue."

, the La Grange Park branch was identified in a feasibility study for potential closure as the U.S. Post Office looked to cut operational expenses. , post office representatives held a public meeting at the La Grange Public Library where residents spoke passionately about their desire to preserve the branch. Over 60 La Grange Park residents attended the meeting in support of the branch. an open house to discuss the branch's possible closure where staff videotaped messages from residents to the U.S. Post Office to further prevent its closure.

The new lease signed by the post office branch calls for five-year term with the option to terminate.

"I'm pleased this worked out for the concerned citizens of La Grange Park," Beverly Howard, corporate communications manager of the USPS Central Illinois District, told village staff.

Village staff called the newly signed lease, "welcome news," in the village's yearlong efforts to preserve the branch from closure and brings the issue to a close for the time being.
