La Grange, La Grange Park Forgo Talks of Local Weapons Bans

Communities pass on talks of enacting an ordinance to ban assault weapons after last week's concealed carry vote.

La Grange and La Grange Park will not consider banning assault weapons after lawmakers overrode Gov. Pat Quinn's amendatory veto of new concealed carry regulations in Illinois, the Doings La Grange reported Friday.

La Grange Police Chief Michael Holub told the Doings carrying concealed weapons and banning assault weapons are separate issues, and connecting the two would likely be "challenged in court."

Restaurants in the area could face issues under the new law, as a firearms ban will protect schools, government buildings, public transportation and bars, where more than half of the establishment's receipts come from alcohol sales, according to the DoingsLiquor license holders in La Grange must show 60 percent of their proceeds are from food sales, the Doings reports.

La Grange Park Village President Jim Discipio told the paper he is concerned about weapons in businesses that serve alcohol.

The Western Springs Village Board last Monday voted to reject an ordinance banning assault weapons, the Doings Western Springs reported Tuesday.

Village President William Rodeghier told the Doings that Cook County already has a ban on assault weapons, and any action taken by the village would be "redundant."
