STOLEN: Thieves Make Off with Rocking Chair

Over the weekend several rocking chairs—part of the La Grange Rocks art display—were vandalized and one was stolen.

Sometime between Sunday and Monday morning, the La Grange Department of Public Works reported to police that a rocking chair—part of the La Grange Rocks art display—was stolen from its location just south of Burlington Aveune on La Grange Road, according to police.

"Unfortunately it's tough to anchor these chairs this year," said La Grange Police Chief Michael Holub. "We want them to be secure, but we also want them to be functional."

The Department of Public Works echoed that sentiment.

"We're going to take a look at some way to make them more secure," said Ryan Gillingham, director of public works. "But if someone wants it bad enough, they're probably going to be able to take it."

So far, the chairs have been secured by a wire—similar to a wire bike lock—which was then attached to the concrete sidewalk.

The rocking chair was designed by Western Springs artist Margaret Prescott for St. Cletus Parish in La Grange. The rocking chair was an ode to the Chicago Bulls and MVP Derrick Rose.

"They basically stole from the church—not the village, not public works," said Nancy Cummings, executive director of the La Grange Business Association. "It's too bad, because they took those proceeds [at auction] away from them."
