Spoeri Indicted on 2 Counts of 1st-Degree Murder

A Grand Jury handed down an indictment of Carl Spoeri on two counts of first-degree murder on Friday.

A Grand Jury at Cook County's Maybrook Courthouse in Maywood, handed down an indictment for two counts of first-degree murder against Carl Spoeri, 55, of La Grange Park at a hearing on Sept. 15.

Spoeri was arrested on Aug. 20 after beating Bojan Zigic unconscious in front of Spoeri's home on the 200 block of Kings Court. He was after Zigic was taken off life support at Loyola University Medical Center and died.

Spoeri was the stepfather of Zigic's fiancé, Erica Spoeri, who also had a 3-month-old child together. , where Erica detailed years of emotional and physical abuse by her stepfather. She described Zigic as a loving partner and a great father to their child. She said Zigic never fought back against Carl Spoeri's attacks.

, Carl Spoeri was angry at Zigic and had kicked the couple out of the Kings Court home in the morning on Aug. 20. Later that day, as the couple was moving out, Spoeri came home and attacked Zigic,  punching him twice in the head, which caused him to fall back and strike his head on the bumper of a vehicle. Zigic was knocked unconcious and began convulsing. He never regained consciousness.

Spoeri will be back in court on Oct. 4 for an arraignment hearing.
