Employees Trade Punches, Boy Handcuffs Himself: La Grange Police Blotter

La Grange police reports, Oct. 8 to 14.

SATURDAY, OCT. 13

Graffiti on 8th Avenue

Police received a report at 12:11 p.m. of “gang graffiti” on the rear of a building on the 1000 block of 8th Avenue. Officers found that a sign and a dumpster had been vandalized with a marker.

Mother Tries to Take Child

Seventh Avenue School reported at 1:27 p.m. that a non-custodial mother of a student was “there to take the child out of class and transfer [him/her] to a different school.” Police informed the mother to speak to legal counsel about custody. She left without incident. Police noted that the registration of the car waiting for the mother came back to a registered sex offender.

Scared of Son?

Police responded to a call of a woman “afraid of someone in her house” on the 500 block of Madison Avenue at 11:33 p.m. The woman eventually refused to cooperate with officers after telling them she’d had a dispute with her son, who had left with a friend.

Teen Runs Away

A mother reported at 4:53 p.m. that her 17-year-old daughter had run away from home on Tuesday and last texted her on Wednesday. Police opened a case file.

Big Fellow on Bike

A complainant reported as a matter of record at 4:20 p.m. that a heavyset man of about 60 years with light-colored hair and black clothing had repeatedly biked past their home on the 600 block of South 10th Avenue on Tuesday and that the same man has been seen later when she was dropping off her kids on the 700 block of South 7th Avenue.

Suspicious Solicitor

A resident on the 600 block of 10th Avenue reported at 2:46 p.m. that a solicitor was at her door claiming to be from First Energy. When she asked for her solicitation credentials, the solicitor said that her supervisor had them. Officers reported that the solicitor left the area.

Mom’s Bank Account

A resident reported to police at 1 p.m. that his mother’s bank account was being used without permission or authorization. The resident told police that the perpetrator was his brother, who lives with their mother, and that a debit card had been used for an unauthorized $15 purchase. The complainant eventually decided to “handle the situation within the family.”

Stolen Wallet

A Western Springs woman reported at 11:20 a.m. that her wallet had been stolen while she was at a business on the 0-100 block of N. La Grange Road. Police opened a case file.

Harasser Vanishes

A caller reported at 7:56 a.m. that a man in his 20s on a bicycle wearing a hooded sweatshirt was outside Lyons Township High School harassing female students. Police were unable to locate any such person.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 10

Bike Taken from Library

A complainant reported at 6:30 p.m. that her unlocked bike had been stolen from outside the La Grange Library. The bike was described as a women’s older blue bike with an oversized rear tire, a fender and a basket bracket without a basket. The value of the bike was not estimated.

Wife Missing in McHenry

A resident reported at 5:30 p.m. that his wife, who has bipolar disorder, had gone missing, driving to McHenry County, and is now unlocatable. Police entered the missing person into leads and opened a case file.

Garage Graffiti

Police reported at 2:11 p.m. that four residential garages on the 900 block of 6th Avenue had been graffiti-tagged with “vulgar words.” The report states that there was no gang affiliation with the symbols. The incident was entered as a matter of record only.

All Hail Lord Drew?

Police received a report at 7:45 a.m. for graffiti on a support of the Ogden Avenue bridge. The graffiti consisted of a red diamond and “VEX,” block-lettered “FZK” and the phrase “MY LORD DREW.” Police entered photos of the vandalism into investigations.

TUESDAY, OCT. 9

Employee Skirmish

Officers responded at 8:14 p.m. to a report of a fight in a business on the 0-100 block of South La Grange Road. Coworkers admitted that they had hit each other and said they would settle the matter with their manager.

Helping Lyons with Arrest

Police received a call from the Lyons Police Department at 7:45 p.m. asking for help in detaining an employee at a La Grange business who is a suspect in a Lyons case. Police detained Valentin Almeida, 24, and turned him over to Lyons police.

Kid Handcuffs Himself

A La Grange Highlands boy came to the police department at 7:40 p.m. to get help in removing handcuffs that he had put on himself. The handcuffs belonged to a parent who is an officer and was at work at the time. Police removed the cuffs.

Underage Drinking Reported in Waiola

A caller at 12:48 p.m. reported several kids in Waiola Park at night “leaving beer bottles lying around behind the little house by the playground.” Police established a special watch.

MONDAY, OCT. 8

Phone Sale Gone Wrong

A New Jersey man reported at 3:08 p.m. that he had attempted to purchase a phone from a man on the 100 block of East Avenue, but the man took his cash, ran inside the house and did not come out. Police opened a case file and the incident is still under investigation.

Toy Gun Causes Concern

A resident called at 2:50 p.m. to report kids in the front yard of a residence on the 700 block of 9th Avenue shooting a BB or air gun. Police ascertained that it was just a toy gun.

Sugar High, Perhaps?

Adventist La Grange security turned in a “baggie with a white substance” at 1:50 p.m. that they had found in the hospital. Police ascertained that it was just candy that had been run over by a car.

Carved in the Slide

An officer reported vandalism in Elm Park at 1:10 p.m., with words scraped into one of the park’s slides. The vandalism had no gang affiliation.

Public Peeing Reported

Police received a report at 10:28 a.m. of a man in his 50s wearing a green jacket and backpack publically urinating at the corner of Hillgrove and Kensington avenues. Police were unable to locate the man.
