Reported to Police: Teen Bats Car, Water Main Breaks, Snow Blower Chips Windshield

La Grange police blotter also includes reports of hit-and-run, car collisions, snow-induced breakage of railroad gates, and more.

Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad police notified La Grange police at about 6:04 a.m. Feb. 7 that the gates kept malfunctioning near 47th Street and East Avenue because a nearby trucking business was putting snow on the railroad tracks. Railroad officials said they notified the business but it was not complying. The matter was turned over to McCook police because the company is under its jurisdiction.

A man told La Grange police at about 3:21 p.m. Feb. 4 that another man was blowing snow into the street in the 4600 block of Eberly Avenue and knocked a rock into his car windshield. The windshield had a chip in it but was not cracked, police said. 

A woman called La Grange police at about 12:24 a.m.  Feb. 5 to report a male teen hit her car side mirror with a baseball bat about 10 minutes earlier at Harris and Seventh avenues. Police could not locate the teen.

A truck parked at an automotive service business in the 600 block of south LaGrange Road was broken into, La Grange police learned at about 10:59 p.m. Feb. 6. No loss was listed.

A water main break was reported at about 12:42 p.m. Feb. 5 on the parkway in the 700 block of south Seventh Avenue. The Department of Public Works was notified but already had been working further down the block. The department asked police to keep an eye on the break and notify them if it got worse.

A woman living in the 700 block of south Sixth Avenue told La Grange police that a man with a beard wearing blue jeans came to her door at about 2:02 p.m. Feb. 5 trying to sell firewood to her. Police found the man, who said he owns a landscaping business and that he and two others are trying to sell firewood in the area. Police told the man that La Grange has an ordinance regulating soliciting.

La Grange police assisted Countryside officers with a fight at a restaurant in the 5400 block of LaGrange Road at about 6:04 a.m. Feb. 7 without incident.

A man called La Grange police at about 2:59 p.m. Feb. 6 to report the traffic signals were malfunctioning at Brainard and Ogden avenues. Police contacted Meade Electric Co.

Police were looking for a blue, two-door car involved in a hit-and-run accident at about 11:32 p.m. Feb. 5 at Kensington and Brewster. The investigation was turned over to La Grange Park because the incident was in that village.

A man came in to the La Grange police station at about 1:46 p.m. Feb. 5 to report he and another person were in a minor traffic accident in the parking lot of Horton’s, 60 S. LaGrange Road. No more information was available.

 A white work van backed into a silver Mercedes sport-utility vehicle at about 7:45 p.m. Feb. 4 in front of the La Grange police station, 304 W. Burlington Ave. No more information was available.

Telephone lines were reported down in the 0-100 block of south Madison Avenue at about 7:45 p.m. Feb. 5.

The La Grange Fire Department provided mutual aid on a fire call at about 3:19 p.m. Feb. 6 at Nazareth Academy, 1209 Ogden Ave. in La Grange Park; at about 12:30 p.m. Feb. 5 in the 3700 block of Grand Avenue in Brookfield; and at about 1:13 p.m. Feb. 6 for a traffic accident with injuries at 47th Street and Gilbert Avenue in Western Springs. In the latter case, a person reported injured refused treatment.
