Police Officer Injured during Confrontation at La Grange Carnival

Martel Aguilar, 20, was making inappropriate overtures to young women at the carnival when police said he resisted arrest, injuring an officer in the process.

A La Grange police officer was injured Friday night while trying to arrest a man who was harassing women at the La Grange Carnival, police said.

Several young women reported that Martel Aguilar, 20, of the 900 block of South La Grange Road, was inappropriately hitting on them near the intersection of Harris and Madison around 8:45 p.m., police said.

Officers told Aguilar to leave the area and warned him not return, but he came back and continued to harass carnival-goers.

Aguilar fled from police when they tried to arrest him and injured an officer in the process, police said. The officer was transported to La Grange Memorial Hospital. He was released but his recovery is ongoing.

Aguilar was charged with aggravated battery of a peace officer, two counts of resisting a peace officer and one count of criminal trespass. He was taken to La Grange Memorial Hospital from the La Grange Police Department Saturday after he complained that he didn’t feel well, police said. He was released from the hospital Sunday and taken to the Leighton Criminal Court Building at 26th and California in Chicago for a bond hearing.

As of Tuesday, Aguilar was being held in Cook County Jail on $5,000 bond.
