UPDATED: IHP Police Officially Have O'Laughlin Murder Suspect in Custody

Indian Head Park police and the Cook County Sheriff officially have confirmed that they are holding in custody a suspect in the murder of Kelli O'Laughlin.

“I hope that this little bit of info that we have tonight will let [the community] sleep easier,” said Indian Head Park police chief Frank Alonzo. "We think that you can all sleep easier tonight.” 

Alonzo and Sheriff Tom Dart confirmed that the individual in custody has served jail time before. No more information about the individual was given.

They have presented all leads, information and evidence to the Illinois state attorney's office. No charges have yet been filed, but they are likely to come on Friday or in the near future.

The police chief and sheriff offered thanks to the labors of everyone involved with investigating the case.

“We worked this case very long and very hard," Alonzo said.

More information should be available by tomorrow morning.

No word on whether charges are forthcoming in the Kelli O'Laughlin murder case. Patch spoke with Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart this afternoon as he was entering the Indian Head Park Police station where the South Suburban Crime Task Force members have been meeting on the case.

"The investigation is moving along, and there has been a lot of progress," Dart said. "[There is] no timetable for charges yet."

Indian Head Park police have confirmed that they have "a person of interest" in custody for the murder of 14-year-old Kelli O'Laughlin.

After sifting through hundreds of leads they've received over the last week in connection to the teen's stabbing, one lead might finally have worked out.

According to ABC7 News in Chicago, the man is question is a state parolee. An unnamed state police source told WLS that the person in custody is a "Chicago gang-banger." According to their sources, the killer might have gotten a cab at the Hinsdale oasis off the Tri-State Tollway.

According to the report, police were able to track the killer using dogs following the man's scent to the Hinsdale oasis.

NBC5 is reporting that Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart is "intimately involved" in the investigation. Dart was seen surveying the backyard of the O'Laughlin home yesterday. WMAQ is also reporting that the killer may have called O'Laughlin's mother either before or after Kelli died, using the teen's cell phone.

The Chicago Tribune reported earlier that a suspect had been brought in for questioning. That man, they said, was connected with a string of burglaries in the Indian Head Park neighborhood over the summer. He was released due to lack of probable cause this summer, but was taken back into custody after O'Laughlin's body was found. He is currently being held at Cook County Jail.

According to the Tribune, their source would not say how long this second suspect has been in custody.
