Police Issue Alert After Residential Burglary Attempt, Theft At Spring Avenue School

La Grange police say they have a suspect in today's residential burglary attempt and theft at Spring Avenue School.

The La Grange Police Department issued a community safety alert today after a residential burglary attempt in the morning and a theft at Spring Avenue School later in the day.

According to the alert, around 7:20 a.m. this morning, officers responded to a complaint of criminal trespass at a home on the 800 block of south Spring Avenue. The homeowner told officers that a man had attempted to enter the home through an open garage door, but left when he realized the family was still home.

A short time later, and while police were in the area looking for the suspect, a man with an olive complexion entered Spring Avenue School around 8 a.m. The man proceeded to a classroom and stole items from a woman's purse. A source at the school described the item as a wallet to Patch.

Police said the individual was "caught in the act" and fled. In both cases today, the man fled in a small silver sport utility vehicle. Following the theft at the school, an employee was able to get the man's vehicle registration number.

La Grange police said an investigation has been conducted and they now have a suspect who has been positively identified, but he is not yet in custody. While they do not believe the suspect will return to the area, they are increasing patrol presence around all of the village's schools today.
