Names, Cause of Death Released in Fire that Killed 2 in La Grange

The deceased were a 90-year-old man and his 91-year-old wife.

The La Grange Fire Department confirmed on Thursday that the two people killed in a house fire early Saturday morning on the 900 block of Kensington Avenue were Roland Martin, 90, and Eleanor Martin, 91, husband and wife.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, Roland Martin died from a combination of carbon monoxide intoxication and an inhalation of smoke and soot and Eleanor Martin from inhalation injuries, both caused by the house fire.

Roland Martin was pronounced dead at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital at 3:32 a.m., the Chicago Tribune reported; according to the La Grange Fire Department, he had perished on the scene. Eleanor Martin, also taken to Adventist La Grange, was pronounced dead at 5:18 a.m.

“The cause of the fire is still undetermined and still under investigation,” La Grange Fire Chief Bill Bryzgalski wrote in an e-mail.
