Lightning Strike Ignites Stone Avenue Home

A teenager was home at the time of the strike and told fire officials it shook the entire house.

Lightning struck a home in the 300 block of Stone Avenue Wednesday afternoon,igniting the the third floor at the height of a thunderstorm, fire officials said. 

A teenager was watching TV downstairs when the strike occurred around 4:30 p.m., shaking the whole house, La Grange Fire Chief Bill Bryzgalski said.

The teenager escaped uninjured and called 911 as the power flickered in and out and smoke detectors went off, Bryzgalski said.

Flames were coming out of a peak on the third floor when firefighters arrived.

Water caused extensive damage to the second and third floors, with some of the damage extending to the first floor, Bryzgalski said. The third floor was heavily burned from the front of the home to the chimney.
