Police Issue Warning About "Grandchild Scam": La Grange Park Police Blotter

La Grange Park police reports, Jan. 22-29.

Illegal Driver

James R. Jackson, 58, of the 1400 block of Homestead Road, was stopped for erratic driving on the 1100 block of Homestead Road at 12:45 a.m. and was charged with driving with a suspended license, as well as improper lane usage and driving with only one headlight, police said.

“Grandchild” Scam

The La Grange Park Police Department reported at 1:19 p.m. that in a recent incident, a La Grange Park grandfather was contacted by someone pretending to be his grandson asking for money; the man was not fooled by the ruse.

Police cautioned the community to beware of callers addressing “Grandpa” or “Grandma” and saying they urgently need money, perhaps for bail, and “not to tell Mom or Dad.” According to La Grange Park police, a woman in a nearby community was recently conned out of $35,000 in this scam.

Illegal Driver II

Nicole N. Darrus, 22, of the 6500 block of Lyman, Downers Grove, was stopped on the 800 block of La Grange Road at 10:30 a.m. and charged with driving with a license expired for more than one year, police said.

Police Blotter information is provided by local law enforcement agencies. Charges are not evidence of guilt. They are a record of police actions taken on a given day, and persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. If you or a family member are charged or cited and the case is subsequently adjudicated, we encourage you to notify the editor. We will verify and report the outcome.
