La Grange Park Man Charged With DUI Hospitalized After Jail Cell Suicide Attempt

Here's an item from the La Grange Park police blotter.

A La Grange Park man, William B. Hickey, 52, was brought to Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, 120 North Oak St., Sept. 1 after La Grange Park police said he threatened to commit suicide in a jail cell and hit himself and banged his head against a cinder-block wall. After being treated for injuries, he was assigned to the psychiatry unit, police said.

He had been ticketed for felony aggravated driving under the influence, aggravated driving with a revoked driver's license; leaving the scene of an accident with property damage; and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

La Grange Park police arrested him at about 2:30 p.m. Aug. 31 at the intersection of Forest Avenue and Monroe Avenue, where they said he fled on foot after his car rear-ended another vehicle about a half-hour earlier on the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad tracks at 31st Street.

A 71-year-old North Riverside woman told police she was eastbound on the 900 block of 31st Street at about 2:07 p.m. on Aug. 31, when she slowed down as her car crossed the railroad tracks. The vehicle behind her hit her rear bumper, she said, and her head hit the headrest and the glove compartment opened.

Both cars stopped and she said the other driver—Hickey—handed her an insurance card and said he did not want police called. He claimed there was not a lot of damage and offered to pay her $1,000, the woman said. She insisted police be called and said the man then fled west on foot, leaving his car.

Police said the car was registered to Hickey's address on the 700 block of Sherwood Avenue and they got a description of Hickey from the North Riverside woman. Police drove toward Hickey's home and said they found him walking west from the scene. Witnesses identified him as the driver, police said.
