La Grange Park Fire Department to Test Response to Hazardous Materials Emergency

Neighbors along the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad might see some fire department activity on Saturday along the tracks, but have no fear, this is just a test!

Residents living along the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad tracks, which run through La Grange Park, might be in for a show this weekend.

On Saturday, La Grange Park Fire Department volunteers and members of an area hazardous materials response team will be training and testing a local response to an emergency situation along the line.

In a letter to residents, Fire Chief Dean Maggos wrote that the line carries "a good deal of freight which can be considered hazardous."

This Saturday, crews will be simulating hazardous material emergencies occurring on the tracks on the 300 and 400 blocks of Beach Avenue. The tests will begin sometime after 7:30 a.m. and will run into the early afternoon.

Apologizing for any noise or disruption, Maggos wrote, "We ask that you please bear with us as this type of training helps to make us a better-prepared and efficient team."
